Re: Al Gore: complete fucking moron or diabolical genius?

I think man definitely contributes to global warming... to an extent. We know that the green house emissions keep solar radiation from escaping through the upper layers of the atmosphere, thereby acting like a blanket. But I don't think we affect it on the scale like we think we do. If every city was like Shanghai, then maybe we'd be in trouble. Unless said "blanket" was made out of Aerogel, then there will always be heat dissipation. Will a blanket warm you up? Sure. But even a good blanket will still allow heat to escape. How do we know the atmosphere doesn't act the same way?

If it was really as bad as some of your are making it out to be, then you'd be walking to work. I bet nearly everyone in this forum drives a car. If this was really as serious as you claim it to be, then you'd put your money where your mouth is. That fact that most of you are driving trucks, sports cars or SUV's (not to mention purchasing products which directly contribute to global warming) demonstrates that it's not to the point where it scares you to make a change. And you know what that means? It means the only things full of hot air are you guys.

When you can sit here unshaven, no deodorant, and clothes made from hemp, telling me that the earth is about to melt, then spare me the "sky is falling" arguments. It didn't work for Gore, and it sure as hell isn't gonna work for you guys.

I personally would like to see us become a high tech, agrarian society with smaller communities where we use technology to produce as much locally as we can. While I don't think global warming is a serious as some think, I DO think taking care of our planets resources is important. I would LOVE to see tech like hydrogen fuel cell cars take off as we learn to harness the power of the sun better. With graphene getting closer to commercial usability, Artifical Leaf technology (see Sun Catalytix) and electrolyzers, we can create some pretty cool energy solutions from nothing but solar.

When we can attack the "global warming" issue from a holistic, economic based series of solutions, THEN it will have the added effect of reducing green house emissions. Simply creating policies because it's easier and quicker will always result in resistance.

My buddy Steve Wozniak has a Tesla. He calls it a work of art but not useful in real driving conditions. He tried to drive it to Vegas a while back and barely made it to charging stations along the way, going 55mph. He said that he heard from other people while charging who had to be towed in to the charging station. Then he had to wait an hour at each one to charge the car. What a pain in the ass. I'll take my Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, thankyuoverymuch.

The problem right now as you described it is even worse than that. What I mean is that policies being put into place are being put there to create new markets to make rich people money, and to create unfair competitive advantages in existing markets to make rich people money. The shit legislation passed nowadays has absolutely zero to do with protecting the environment and everything to do with special interests and money. The entire global warming movement is in the same boat.

This is the difference between Corporatism and Capitalism, and it's a distinction that a lot of people don't understand. There is sure as hell a lot of corporatism happening with liberal progressives in charge.

Re: Al Gore: complete fucking moron or diabolical genius?

If everyone drove a Tesla, we would have mountains of toxic battery waste in less than a decade. It would be an enviromental disaster.

And Hydrogen fuel cell driven cars will never become mainstream. The infrastructure isn't there, and isn't close. Mom and Pop gas stations would have to convert at an extremely high cost, or die.

But we are on the right track with developing their respective technologies. The more we can use, and the less we waste, the better off we are. Man-made global warming is nothing more than a bs sales pitch, but if it also a motivator that steers people towards conservation, some good can come out of it. Take lighting for example......

The global warming sales people pushed the cfl lamps as an enviromentally safe alternative to the Edison-based incandescant. So, instead of light bulbs made in say Iowa, they are all made (because they contain Mercury) in India and China, and then spend quite a bit of time being shipped by diesel cargo ship, dispersed by diesel locomotive, and hauled/delivered by diesel semi trucks. They use more energy than any incandescant just getting to their users. Then, since your average homeowner is stupid and lazy, most of the Mercury contaminated cfls end up in the local dump, and eventually the water supply. All under the guise of saving the planet. Huge crock of shit.

The real-deal was just around the corner. The LED lamp. No Mercury (not even Freddie), no need to produce them overseas, and no toxic waste. They use 1/6 of the electricity of an Edison lamp, and many carry a 30,000 hour life expectancy (~4 hours a day for 30+ years). They cost a bit more (less every day), but their proliferation is being helped by the motivation that Capt. Planet and others have created. Sometimes, out of bullshit grows some roses.

True on the LED's, but they are gouging us from a price perspective. I can buy a super bright fucking LED flashlight for $3 but an LED version of a 60 watt bulb is $10? Fuck that.

Edison based incandescant lamp = ~$1, but has to be replaced every year, and a 60 Watt draws 1/2 an Amp every time the switch is flipped.

Typical LED replacement (~equal to a 60 Watt ic lamp) = $10-15, but lasts for 30+ years (1/3 to 1/2 the cost/year), and uses ~1/12th of an Amp when the switch is flipped.

LED lamps are MUCH cheaper in the long run, with no chemical hangovers.

And they are getting cheaper, literally, by the day. When installed throughout the entire house, they not only make a noticable economic difference, but a mechanical one as well. Less load on the electrical system (which happens almost never......Hell, even vacuum cleaners and hair dryers are now sporting 12 Amp motors), and no heat. A house-full of 60 and 75 Watt lamps is actively working againsed your Summer cooling budget, and not in a small way.

In fact, your statement and this link supposedly supporting it is just an insult to any thinking person - I mean what the fuck kind of proof is this? Furthermore, it is common scientific knowledge that what I said it true. It is a FACT than mankind is responsible for less than 4% of yearly carbon emissions worldwide. Whether you like it or not. I used 4% because it is the highest number you will find from any credible source, you know, sources like the United States Department of Energy in 2000, which put it at about 3%.

The man-made story is foolishness, based on such a small sample and timeline that it's statistically insignificant. Foolishness, with multiple coverups from leading scientists on the issue in the last 10 years as more and more are waking up to reality. REAL scientific study proves the man made theory is wrong.

Global Warming: A closer look at the numbers
Your website doesn't support you. He gets his 4% figure by counting all of the CO2 in the entire atmosphere, not just the amount that's produced each year. Here's one of the rows from his table:

all concentrations expressed in parts per billion) Pre-industrial baseline Natural additions Man-made additions Total (ppb) Concentration Percent of Total
    Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 288,000 68,520 11,880 (2) 368,400 99.438%

Here you have four measurements: Baseline CO2, naturally-added CO2, added man-made CO2, and the total. You claimed that humans represent 4% of the contribution each year. In case you're feeling dishonest about that, here's your quote:
Quote Originally Posted by -Lazarus- View Post

By his numbers, (68K + 11.9K) / 11.9K = 6.9K. He gets his 4% figure by dividing the much larger total, which includes the entire atmospheric content of CO2 (and then doing some very dubious math, which I'll get into), not just yearly production.

But it's just as well that this source didn't agree with you, because it's junk. I know that you guys don't like to hear your sources questioned, but seriously, this is junk.

    1. He cites Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, but ignores their numbers when they contradict his claims:
    http://datahub.io/dataset/cdiac/reso...1-76c9759f96b1
In the period 1751 to 1900, about 12 gigatonnes of carbon were released as carbon dioxide to the atmosphere from burning of fossil fuels, whereas from 1901 to 2008 the figure was about 334 gigatonnes(wikipedia). Apparently, they're only a good source when they agree with his agenda.

    2. He gets his 11,880, human contribution number from a report titled Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change by IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme. He claims that this data is unaccessible now, and I can't find anything, anywhere about this paper. This number is central to his argument, and as far as I can tell, it's made-up. Why wouldn't he use the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center's numbers? They cover the addition of greenhouse gases by the burning of fossil fuels, so why ignore their numbers and instead mix in an unrelated, possibly fabricated study that no longer exists?

    3. Another of his major sources for "human contribution" numbers is CO2 and the "Greenhouse Effect" Doom. This is a global-warming denialist website by "Tom V." The "paper" that it cites isn't published in a scientific publication, it's published by a political group - The Heartland Institute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It's a policy paper (it even offers an abridged "summary for policymakers" version.

I can go on. Do you want me to continue?

97% of scientists disagree with you. The best source that you can find is a shitty website that cites articles from right-wing pressure groups.
