We have record of human impacts on the environment for millennia. Farming, damming and diverting rivers, removing key species from an ecosystem, etc.

You're probably thinking of climate data when you say 1880, but that's also incorrect. We can measure things like temperature and CO2 with ice cores, tree growth patterns and the like. To say that it's "arrogant" to admit that Man can drastically change his environment is silly - especially so since the atomic age began.
