You do not have to produce ID under any circumstances. (This does not apply if you are driving. That activity itself requires a license/ID). The United States does not have any sort of internal passport requirement. Which means you do not have to carry any sort of identification. Hence, when stopped you do not have to PRODUCE any form of identification. You DO have to identify yourself if asked. So don't go "fuck you I don't have to tell you my name." That's not going to go over well and you will likely at that point be detained.

b) a "random" stop is a grey area that I don't think has been addressed by the supreme court yet. Normally they cannot detain someone without reasonable suspicion that the person is about to, is in the process of, or has committed a crime. However, they can say that they SUSPECT that you may be driving without a valid license. That then allows them a stop. Doing a broad, blanket stop for a "checkpoint" though might disallow that.

c) once they say you are being detained... you damn well better comply. Ten years ago I would say you have the chance of getting the shit beat out of you if you don't. NOW, you stand an equal chance of getting shot, lit on fire, poisoned, and possibly fed to lions.

Well... I think about half the states have a stop and identify law. Some of those say you have to give your name and address. A federal judge however has ruled that the ONLY thing you have to do is give your name. If your state does NOT have a stop and identify law you probably don't even have to give your name.

I miss the sobriety checkpoints. When I was the designated driver, I would routinely drive through them over and over, until I was pulled over. Let the time wasting begin. I loved doing the roadside calisthenics.

Unfortunately, the SC of the Great State of Minnesota ruled that any and all random checkpoints were against our Constitution, and my fun was over.

Depends on your state and whether you have a stop and identify law in place. As I stated. Illinois, here, yes. You do.
