As soon as they demonstrate some actual science, I am all for giving them some attention. I won't hold my breath.

    Re: Creationist Cosmos

I was soo looking forward to the "new" Cosmos ... and then I watched a few episodes and wanted to vomit.

I am a scientist. I am fascinated by what I study as well as by those efforts to push the boundaries of our understanding. I relish scientific theory and exploration. I even enjoy science fiction, understanding that it is fiction (though I hate stupid fiction rooted in gross misunderstandings or outright ignorance of common/rational sense).

I utterly despise dogmatic pursuit of agendas the attempt to cloak themselves with a thin veil of "science." I will not deny that there isn't some interesting work accidentally accomplished in these endeavors, but I abhor the subversion of the scientific method and the hypocrite acceptance of scientific theory as fact/natural law. At best it is perverse, at worst ... well, the consequences are often life threatening.

As I have said many times, religion is a matter of faith. Religion is NOT the domain of science. Science is NOT a matter of faith. You cannot prove/disprove religion because religion is rooted in faith. Just as well, you cannot prove/disprove science by faith.

    ....

Sorry ... expected much more and once again I am sorely disappointed.

    Could you be more specific?
Maybe their "dumbing" down of ideas makes them sound more dogmatic?

I have watched all but the first episodes and I love this program. I also know that this series has bitten off a lot to chew. Their target audience is as well NOT scientifically literate viewers. But their ability to weave a story that will keep you watching is fantastic.

    Re: Creationist Cosmos

The big bang is a theory. Anyone that describes it otherwise is an idiot, ignorant, and/or malicious (those that know better are at the very least malicious).

They are "dumbing" down some things, necessarily so. However, simplifying a topic doesn't excuse the malfeasance in presenting theory as if it is fact. They are feeding those that do not know better a pack of lies intended to meet a specific agenda. It also doesn't excuse the assault on religion. Many of our great scientists in the past and present were/are people of faith. Why they have felt the need to go there speaks to the motivation of those invested in this program.

Have they done a nice job with pictures and "weaving stories" ... yes, I can give them that. They have been effective at making fiction interesting. I would enjoy some of the less controversial and creative illustrations if it wasn't enveloped by the blatant beatification of junk science and scientific perversion.

I have stopped watching the show, maybe two episodes ago. I was tired of having my intelligence assaulted and disturbed with watching science molested.

Am I "ranting" ... yep, just tired of their crap ... time to let it go. I'll take an enema tonight.

Sounds to me like you just don't like the fact that they don't take superstition and illogical fairy tales and heap them in with their stories.

The big bang theory is, by NAME ALONE, a theory. As we learn more it grows closer to fact. If that doesn't fit with someone's religious dogma... oh well. Too bad.

possibly... because I've watched it all and don't see what you are seeing in the least. I see a show that's teaching people and being entertaining at the same time.

I watched most of the first episode. I haven't watched it since, and I can think of two reasons why.

First, the commercials. I found the advertising breaks to be jarring. I hardly watch any TV anymore. When I do I notice the ads more and more, and that makes me want to watch TV less and less. The only (occasional) exception is sporting events. Some sports on TV find a good balance, and for some reason the ads bother me less. Hockey does ok. Basketball (especially college tournament) is terrible. It feels like they arbitrarily stop the game to show more crap ads. It isn't enjoyable and so I simply don't watch.

The original Cosmos must have had a very different feel; more like an HBO series. Broadcasting uninterrupted does wonders for the flow and pacing of the experience. Maybe if the new Cosmos gets huge reviews I'll find time to get the DVDs from my public library. But maybe not, which brings me to...

Second, I'm not their audience. Partly that's because I now know some of this stuff. Mostly it's because I'm not the sort of person who needs a show to be visually spectacular in order for it to be interesting. If special effects help explain the narrative of the show then that's great, but parts of that first episode looked like a video game. For me, the effects were getting in the way of the substance. It was distracting.

I'm not saying that makes it a bad show, just that it felt like they were trying to tell their story to someone else. That's a good thing. I'm already captivated by this stuff, and seek out good science news just because I find it interesting. If the show captures the imagination of teens then: mission accomplished.

I can forgive the CGI showboating. Also, I can't pass judgement on the whole thing. I only watched the first episode, and I didn't make it through to the end. If it hadn't been for the ad interruptions, I would have watched all of that and more.

    But when I read this:

The big bang is a theory. Anyone that describes it otherwise is an idiot, ignorant, and/or malicious (those that know better are at the very least malicious).

malfeasance in presenting theory as if it is fact.

a pack of lies intended to meet a specific agenda.

    assault on religion

    effective at making fiction interesting.

blatant beatification of junk science and scientific perversion.

    my intelligence assaulted

    disturbed with watching science molested.

... it makes me want to invite you over so we can watch it together. Bro, I want to party with you. What did you see that I missed?

If it's really that sore a point then don't let me poke the wound before it scabs over. But now it sounds like I missed something special (or especially bad), and I'm curious.

    Cheers,
