I have a buddy that once told me he was going to kill himself (long after the fact). He went to the parking lot of a park adjacent to the local high school, took out his service pistol... put it under his chin... And for the first time in his life he prayed to god to give him a sign to not do it. At that moment a school bus drove up and parked, in the empty lot next to his car. He goes "that was my sign. A school bus full of kids parking next to me made me decide not to. That's when I found god. He sent me a message."

I sat there for a minute. Because I'm not religious in the least. And said "That wasn't a sign he sent. It was an audience."

He didn't speak to me for a month.

And for the record... I feel much the same way Gene does. But I also know the crushing weight that depression can have. You are no longer thinking about anything but "make it stop... make it stop..." So I know the other side of the equation as well and would certainly attempt to help someone that needed it.

As for Mr. Simmons... the cure for everything that has anything at all to do with that douchebag is to stop paying attention to him. Something like 35-40 years ago he had a brief moment in the spotlight as a scary alien clown and a barely competent bass player.

For a few years he helped provided theatrical escapism to a subset of American youth who hadn't yet acquired any musical or artistic taste - in exchange for which he was grossly over-compensated.

I don't begrudge him any of the fame or financial success he had in the past, and if anyone ever offered to over-compensate me for my bad prose or poetry I'd be more than happy to sign the checks, but at this point my desire to stand up for his right to say whatever he wants is only matched by my desire to own Gene Simmons Cancelling Headphones. I want an audio-stream plug-in that detects and cancels his voice. I want a video-stream plug-in that detects and cancels his image. I want an FCC mandate to install this software in all US-licensed broadcast facilities.

I'd also like a system that detects if anyone anywhere in the world says "I agree with Gene Simmons" or "I think Gene Simmons is interesting" and then tazers Gene Simmons' balls. But I guess the world only ever improves in small increments, and so for the moment we might have to be content to just not pay him any attention.
