    education

This stemmed from the Texas BoE re-writing American history thread, didn't want to derail any further......

I was going to post this in response to (he knows who he is), But please, everyone, vote and discuss.

Tell me if I am wrong, but I glean from your statements about how bloated a horrible the public education system is, that you do not like public education, and you put it on par with social security(which you have advocated privatizing if not getting rid of altogether) and healthcare(which you argue tooth and nail to keep in private hands and not public), then you mention repeatedly about your aspiration of child rearing. Yet when I assume that you either want to abolish public education altogether and privatize and homeschool, I am wrong.

So where do you stand? Do you think there is a place of importance for public education? Do you think that there should be a public education program?

Its certainly not as good as it could be. We are falling behind of other countries and we need to change that.

    Re: education

I go to private school and definitely feel as though I receive a superior education. That statement may seem elitist, but the statistics are there to support it, 98% of our students went to college (there are always like 2-3 that join the military)

At the same time, I would not want to preclude those without the means my family has to earning an education.

So I voted for the "I think it is not quite a failure, but certainly not a resounding success. It ought to be strengthened." choice. Same as hawgballs, whaddya know.

I too am a product of private schooling catholic grammar school and catholic high school. I as well believe I received a "superior education". But i know that not everyone can afford it. Although a public education is not perfect, I think it sets a decent standard considering the alternative for those that couldn't afford private schooling would be no school at all, if there wasn't a public education program.

    haha

I am about 3/4 of the way through Wolves of the Calla

I love the series and would read all seven in a month if I could... but have to balance it with my other "academic" literature, Moby Dick at the moment

For starters, lengthening the school year from 180 days to 200 or 220 days. We can also discuss lengthening the school day and making it about as long as a regular work day, 8-9 instead of the 7 hours or so in public. Push back the AP tests by 15 days or so to allow more preparations. The list goes on.

    agreed.

to be honest the change that I want to see is a raising of the minimal standards demanded by our society.

I work at a Toys R' Us in Kentucky... I see and speak with some people who are downright difficult to deal with because they are so heavily ignorant. Then I make the correlation that the reason those people are in a toy store is because they are parents and it almost makes me angry to think of the cycle being fueled in such a manner, because the parents are not having their slack picked up by public education as I can easily say that some of the tiny county schools here in Kentucky are doing very little to challenge and expound the minds of their students.

    Re: education

For elementary and some of highschool I also attended a private catholic school.

My son is now in public but we are looking into a good private school.
