If she didn't respond to letters or open the door when people came by, I am not sure what the home owners association is supposed to think. It is sad, but she is really at fault. I am willing to bet that the HOA was willing to work with the families as long as they were talking.

I don't know if I would call them greedy. I don't know what kind of screwy mortgage these people were paying, but for me, my HOAs are automatically deducted every month. Sure, it is less than $40/month, but it is put in escrow until the dues need to be paid each year.
A family with a $300,000 home should be aware of how these things work... and they should pay them. If they can't afford them or if they are not responsible enough to make sure all of their bills are paid, then they should not live in such an expensive home.
I feel sorry for the husband. He is the one putting his life on the line each day, and his wife screwed up big. All she had to do was make sure the bills are paid.

But if they don't KNOW that the husband is active duty and deployed in Iraq, what else are they supposed to do? The lady doesn't open her mail, doesn't answer the door when people come by the house, and I am willing to bet she doesn't answer the phone either.
Also, what kind of fucked up law is this? Where is the bank in this whole situation? In Florida, the worst that can happen is that a lien is put on your home. Foreclosure filings are done through the courts.

if they were required to send a certified letter and she didnt sign for it, I dont see how they can proceed with foreclosure. I support changing laws to remove power from HOAs. I personally would never live where I was told what I could and couldnt do to my home. A woman was kicked out of her home here in SA because of HOA bs. What do these people in these associations gain by kicking people out of their home. I'm sorry but not paying a $800 dues to an association is a retarded reason for kicking someone out of their house.

Yes, something is very fishy about this story... not sure if it is 100% truthful.
The foreclosed on the home in May 2008, yet the husband deployed in February 2008. So unless they are paying $200/month in HOAs, I really don't see how they accumulated a debt of $800. They must have been behind BEFORE he was deployed.
I would like to hear the the HOA's side of the story before I make an opinion on them. I am guessing they have a LONG history of not paying their HOA dues.
