Obama Speech Fail?
Sounds like it from what the MSNBC people are saying:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50GAACuKEQs
Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Howard Fineman react to President Obama's Oval Office Address on the oil spill. Here are the highlights of what the trio said:
Olbermann: "It was a great speech if you were on another planet for the last 57 days."
Matthews compared Obama to Carter.
Olbermann: "Nothing specific at all was said."
Matthews: "No direction."
Howard Fineman: "He wasn't specific enough."
Olbermann: "I don't think he aimed low, I don't think he aimed at all. It's startling."
Howard Fineman: Obama should be acting like a "commander-in-chief."
Matthews: Ludicrous that he keeps saying [Secretary of Energy] Chu has a Nobel prize. "I'll barf if he does it one more time."
Matthews: "A lot of meritocracy, a lot of blue ribbon talk."
Matthews: "I don't sense executive command."

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
Did any of you watch it or are you getting your info from your favorite biased critic?
I do see a problem with what he said.
If anything the republicans of LA are in a bind. A whole bunch of hard working Americans are out of work on the coast due to BP's fuck up. Thing is that Obama is suggesting that BP pay restitution to the families directly impacted.
but no big government should not tell a company what to do!
but those families dont give a shit they want food on the table and money to pay the bills.
BUT NO THE RIGHT DOES NOT SUPPORT BIG GOV........
lame.
If you back up BP you have some loose screws.
Humans are always evolving. Same goes for energy.
Steam.......fossil fuels.........green energy......

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
Didnt see the address live, but I read the transcript later. To me it still sounds like a campaign speech...lots of promises and good talk, but no sign that hes actually gonna follow through with this. Trying to make BP pay for the whole Gulf restoration is a joke. Make BP pay for the oil clean up and things affected by the oil, NOT what the hurricanes and decades of weathering have done to the coast. To me it seems like hes gonna use a BP fuck up to pay for the damage the last couple of hurricanes have done and then some. And the smartest thing hes probably doing is making a third party take care of the money that BP is gonna set aside for reparations. Honestly if the government had control of it, itd go to fund one of Obama's failures, and if BP was in charge of it the money would never get to the people who need it.

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
I truly feel we are not moving forward in energy use. We have many many technologies that are much better than fossil fuels. Fossil fuels still have some uses, but for powering homes we need to be moving towards other technologies solar, wind and yes nuclear.
So yes I believe we still need the fossil fuels we just need companies that are responsible. In what has the possibility of truly devastating the an entire region for decades, you would think the federal govt would step in and get busy. BP may not be able to handle it but if the govt would move them out of the way there are companies that can handle it.

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
I watched some of it, not all of it. I did read the transcript, which I have to say is more than the Democrats who criticized Arizona's immigration law did in that case. MSNBC is far from my favorite "biased" news source. I normally am complaining about them and they are considered by many to be the most liberal of the news networks, so when even they are taking issue with the President's speech, you know I am going to take notice.
My personal view is that President Obama didn't realize it was going to be such a big issue when it first happened, he is seeing that his damage control isn't working, and that his speech was a failed attempt to change that. More campaign speeches, more rhetoric, and few if any concrete ideas with a laid out "this is the goal, this is how we are going to reach it" approach.
As far as BP goes, yes they screwed up. Royally. But the government doesn't have the power to just take the money from BP. In order to do that, they need to go through the courts. I do think that BP should pay for all the damage it has done, but Obama saying he is "looking for asses to kick" and that he is going to go get the money from them. That isn't how the government works. It has to go through the judicial system, not the executive branch.

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
I streamed Obama's address at work. Honestly, it was more of the same. More lip service and more hand waving. For the layman out there, that means he said what the general populous wanted to hear and used this as an opportunity to advance his agenda before the public.

Re: Obama Speech Fail?
It is fucking rediculous to even expect our US government to even entertain the fact that we make a company pay families who are "out of work" because of the oil spill. BP should be forced to clean it up, but that is it.
If you own a ford truck, and it doesnt start one morning, are you going to call ford and tell them they owe you money cuz you couldnt go to work because of their engineering?
Rediculous...quit looking for a fucking hand out. Life is tough, and unfair, but you move on...overcome...and adapt...
