Yes, but at the same time this is nothing more than a proposed bill dreamed up by a loony well-known for his crazy ideas (see: Mortal Kombat). Lots of crazy shit is proposed to Congress and never makes it anywhere serious.

Moreover, the government has no controlling interest in the commercial Internet anyway, it's all privately owned and controlled. Anything the government/military does is handled on a secure WAN, not through private ISPs or commercial routers. For now, this is nothing more than Lieberman's misguided jowels flapping in the wind. I'm sure he thought it up one day after he figured out how to CC the House on an email.

Should the lion king also be able to stop phone service, cable, cell phone coverage and radio? It is all the same thing. It starts as national security and then moves to something else. Some of you are way too trusting of your government.

Having the ability to ration food, commandeer banks, or many of the other things that have been done in desperate times were probably also viewed as ridiculous in normal times. I am about as far from an Obama supporter as you can get, but I think those of you claiming that this is so over the top are just grasping at straws.

I'm wondering exactly how they would propose to kill the internet assuming there's some sort of emergency? (thinking of logistics involved) and they would really cut the entire thing off for the whole US for example if there's some wacko in say new york up to something? surely there are provisions in place to do that on a state by state basis as well somewhere in the wording..

Come on people. With all the technology the government holds back do you honestly think they dont have a way to take over the web? They can already take over the air waves remember emergency broadcasting. Im sure there's a way china, iran, and N korea have done it in their perspective countries in one way or another.

most of what I read in it was just about making sure the Federal/State/and Local critical systems weren't at risk, and working with the private sector to do the same (just for critical systems). There was one part about forcing some private critical systems to comply with plans or w.e. put forth during a "cyber national emergency" but that was about it.
