AZ Immigration: Nothing New
Immigrant cycle familiar to United States
When it comes to immigration, the United States has come full circle . . . again. As Arizona's new immigration law pushes the issue into the national spotlight, decades-old arguments over government policy, economic needs and human rights are being raised in a politicized confrontation over what it means to be an American. On one side, many fear illegal immigrants are taking their jobs, spreading violence and changing American culture. On the other side, many believe the tide of opposition will result in discrimination, racial profiling and the denial of constitutional rights.
As with previous immigrant waves, a chorus is rising among many citizens that something must be done. Politicians are responding with new laws. Immigrants are leaving.
So, the feds are suing to stop Arizona immigrant law.... What do you guys think the outcome will be?Last edited by Arreo; 07-07-10 at 05:35 PM.

Re: AZ Immigration: Nothing New
If the feds want to argue that the states do not have jurisdiction to question citizenship, I will be severely pissed off.
It SHOULD be the feds job, but thier lack of doing...well anything, ever, republicans, democrats, everyone, is not ganna fly.
I m pulling for AZ...I hope they send a message loud and fucking clear!

LOL what do you forget what you post in other threads?
You yourself state that BIGGOV will always triumph state law.
I am against this law because it just scratches the surface of the problem. Its like quick fix on a leaky pipe, just to please the voters to show them that skeletor is doing something!
This is the reasoning behind the gov's case.
The "invalid" law interferes with federal immigration responsibilities and "must be struck down."
I see no reason to support a law that is "aimed" at a small majority of the AZ hispanic population. At the same time its the legal majority that will be harassed for no reason.
Really though this law is not going to stop illegals from coming over or lower numbers. A piss poor planned pushed through with clever marketing and fear tactics.

Re: AZ Immigration: Nothing New
I like the law because it is exposing the federal government. They need to put up or shut up.
A business we use at work lost several employees recently because the federal govt caught up to the employees false documents. One employee was paying taxes on a false idenity for 15+ years and they finally caught up. Wow! thats some super detective work. Your employer sends all your info to the govt when they hire you. The IRS was collecting money and SS was receiving money. After all that time why wouldnt you become a citizen? Why wasnt this caught sooner?
Someone needs to do something, at least AZ is stirring the pot.

Read the Lawsuit
S.B. 1070’s mandatory enforcement scheme will conflict with and undermine the federalwith Mexico and other countries.
government’s careful balance of immigration enforcement priorities and objectives. For
example, it will impose significant and counterproductive burdens on the federal agencies
charged with enforcing the national immigration scheme, diverting resources and attention
from the dangerous aliens who the federal government targets as its top enforcement priority.
It will cause the detention and harassment of authorized visitors, immigrants, and citizens
who do not have or carry identification documents specified by the statute, or who otherwise
will be swept into the ambit of S.B. 1070’s “attrition through enforcement” approach. It will
conflict with longstanding federal law governing the registration, smuggling, and
employment of aliens. It will altogether ignore humanitarian concerns, such as the
protections available under federal law for an alien who has a well-founded fear of
persecution or who has been the victim of a natural disaster. And it will interfere with vital
foreign policy and national security interests by disrupting the United States’ relationship
It's going to disrupt your "...careful balance of immigration enforcement priorities and objectives"
What are those? Sit on your fucking ass and not do a god damn thing? Because you have been pretty good at that. Oh arizona, get some good lawyers...because this is going to be the trial of our lifetime....
I recommend reading the suit...man i love law...this might be our new civil war....

Re: AZ Immigration: Nothing New
Through the INA, Congress set forth the framework by
which the federal government determines which aliens may be eligible to enter and reside
in the United States, which aliens may be removed from the United States, the consequences
for unlawful presence, the penalties on persons who violate the procedures established for
entry, conditions of residence, and employment of aliens, as well as the process by which
certain aliens may ultimately become naturalized citizens of the United States.See 8 U.S.C.
§ 1101, et seq.
Its like...we control everything...but we aint ganna do nothing about it...wtf?

Re: AZ Immigration: Nothing New
In exercising its significant enforcement discretion, the federal governmentand fugitive aliens, especially those with criminal records.
prioritizes for arrest, detention, prosecution, and removal those aliens who pose a danger to
national security or a risk to public safety. Consistent with these enforcement priorities, the
federal government principally targets aliens engaged in or suspected of terrorism or
espionage; aliens convicted of crimes, with a particular emphasis on violent criminals, felons,
and repeat offenders; certain gang members; aliens subject to outstanding criminal warrants;
