09-15-10, 01:20 AM #1Possible vote on the Dream Act within a week
The Dream Act would basically fast track those who came here as children and ended up either going to college or serving in our military for citizenship. My only issue with the vote is I hate attaching it to unrelated legislation, even though it is a standard practice in Washington :/.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today he is planning to attach an immigration reform measure that would help undocumented students to the Defense authorization bill slated to hit the Senate floor next week, CBS News Capitol Hill producer John Nolen reports...

I would have to look over it (too late for me right now), but it sounds like a good idea to me. Come to the country, if you want citizenship, either go through the long and tedious task of the immigration offices, sign up with the military and serve and protect the country to get citizenship, or get an education to get you higher up as a working member of the society.
But alas, that sounds too good to be true.....a mystery for tomorrow!

I have always thought it is appropriate to award citizenship to those who serve in the military. You fight for it, you own it.
College, although commendable on a personal level, not so much.
I thought we saw confident claims in these very forums....... comprehensive immigration reform was coming. Is this it?

I can agree with the service part but the college i cant go with. If you had enough determination to finsh college then you should have plenty to fill out the paper work for the immigration process. In fact will your in college would be a perfect time for it.

ummmm - who said anything about anchor babies? If I read the short linked article correctly this has absolutely nothing to do with children born here...oh wait your trolling...nevermind
Agreed on the military service as a "shoe in" to citizenship proceedings. As far as people "brought here as minors" (as the article states) illegally, being fast-tracked once they are in college...I am a little more hesitant about. I can agree with wicked's statement that going to college would generally be a good indicator of intent to get a job and pay taxes. And I am not arguing that point. However, I can see the potential abuse of this extension. Personally, I think attaching anything at all to education as a proverbial "carrot" for something other than the education is a very bad idea.
The purpose of education has become watered down and debased enough already. It used to be that college education was what everyone aspired to get. You needed college (BS) to be gainfully employed. Now, everyone and their dog has a BS or a BA from some college somewhere and the BS/BA is now equivalent to the HS Diploma. But, I digress, that is a whole 'nother topic.
