At our public school we were not allowed to show religious symbols in efforts to Policital Correct.

    So sucks to be her.

Just like France has banned people wrapping their head in headwraps.

How many of you have a job that allows you to wear anything you want? Most (respectable) places I know have uniforms or strict dress codes. School is preparing kids for the future, see no reason why they cant enforce a dress code. While some things they enforce are a bit silly the line has to be somewhere. A nose, lip or tongue piercing is no where near as distracting as some clothing but if its the rule, work to change it or abide by it.

Is that true? I've never heard that. Can anyone attest to this or back it up?

It depends on the industry, I have a very respectable job and can wear whatever I wanted. When I worked in a research lab, the same held true barring safety issues (no sandals, etc). As for nose rings, my wife wears a nose ring to her job as a nurse, it's hardly a shocking display of individuality.

You had rules, no sandals. Depending on what other safety precautions perhaps no loose baggy clothing. Some places you have to wear steel toe shoes, other places shoes with non slip soles. Hospitals you wear scrubs. Rackspace allows its employees to wear pretty much whatever they want. There are always exceptions, but by and large most places have some rules over what you wear to work. Most places have rules that are in place for safety reasons, others have rules for sanitary reasons, others for customer relations.

Schools come up with reasons and they dont always make sense, but should probably be followed until they can be worked to for change.

I was just in the hospital, lots of employees had piercings, but the nurse in the OR had to remove her lip piercing before going in. Rules every where you go, follow them or work to change them.

For those down on schools wearing uniforms, while I never had to, and for the most part of those I see in this conversation I am roughly ~15 years younger, not sure about Trigger but I know Canadian is roughly my age.

But yeah any way. School uniforms have benefits, as dex said it helps make a choice for kids. It also makes everyone equal. I know growing up I some times felt bad about myself because I couldn't afford to get name brand stuff and often would sometimes wear 2nd hand things. (old and worn look wasn't in yet) Also it helps as was already said about the Dallas area. I know in the city of Lawrence next to my school, their schools are uniformed due to gangs. They do not want people expressing their affiliations in school.

MOST cases there is a reason for uniforms. As it is in this case I do not think there were uniforms even, but just a general dress code as Flame is talking about. Usually for safety reasons things are put in place. Who knows maybe she is in shop or something where her nose ring could get infected or cause harm to her or the instruments she is using?

My personal opinion is some people take things way too personal, especially with their religion. I am Catholic but you never saw me pushing it on someone or excusing myself for confession during school. If it can be done I think that we all should make successions to accommodate the whole. If her religion doesn't mandate her continuously wearing the nose ring, why not take it out for the few hours while you're in school? If it is mortal sin? ok maybe let her leave it in but otherwise please...

Aw hell, let them run wild and naked with piercings coming out of their wahoo. That is a very responsible thing to do with our kids. If parents would raise their kids and give them the attention they deserve we would not even be having a discussion like this. Some freak cult gave this girl more attention than her mother and father.
