A. Thanks! :P
B. You are far more likely to find GS guys not doing their jobs because they know they cannot be fired and it is very likely given their hiring practices that they were not even qualified for the job to start with. Contractors on the other hand get released all the time. Also, the prevailing thought that replacing contractors with government workers, a practice called "insourcing", saves money is just flat out wrong. Even SECDEF Gates admits that: Pentagon abandons insourcing effort (8/10/10) -- GovExec.com
This hits close to home for me because my team is being insourced at the end of this year. They offered us our jobs at much less than I am making now and as a bonus, my taxes would go up because contractors and GS guys are under different tax rules. Guess how many folks took that deal?
To change things would require a major overhaul of the GS system. Since it would be mostly GS guys in charge of such an overhaul, I would not hold my breath.
But I digress. This thread is not about that and this is totally thread-crapping so I will stop. As to the jobless recovery, while technically it is a recovery, most people will not buy that until the jobs return. Anyone see that happening any time soon?Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.

IMO, gov should take 60% of the income of all professional sports players. Do something that prevents future generates from aspiring to follow the outragious profitable career path of sports (because why would a child want to be a teacher when throwing a ball earns them... 3000%+ of what a teacher gets paid?).
IMHO, America's priorities are so out of whack, how could we expect anything else? For example we value sports more than we do education: on average universities give out 30X's more FULL RIDE sports scholarships than they do FULL RIDE scholarships for academic reasons. How fucked up is that?! Even more so, on average the number of non sports scholorships that yield less than $3,000, is nearly equal to the number of FULL RIDE SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS!.
In other words, screw Johnny who might be able to cure cancer, lets fund the education of Bill because he can throw/kick/catch a ball....

Re: Dont worry its getting better lol
ya... ill agree to that when they start offering more academic scholarships. Better yet, lets look at some University expenses and see how many we can declare unjustified that could have been better used to fund a student... Schools have money, fuck technically a scholorship only costs them the price of the teacher salaries... Dont go spouting that shit, schools could easily match the full ride academic scholarships to sports scholarships. ESPECIALLY the private schools, who cost 40K a semester to instate and outstate. Seriously 15k->20k students * $40k + sports income? Saying we are doing the best we can? Hell we are not even trying.

Re: Dont worry its getting better lol
That's bogus. You get paid what you can make a company/business and you're worth what the market will pay you. If people are going to buy tickets, jerseys, concessions, etc..... enough so that teams/companies are willing to pay their workers (players) millions of dollars then so be it.
Just because you don't think someone should be making a lot of money because you don't care for their profession, doesn't mean it's a good idea to take more of their money because YOU feel they earn too much.
And besides that....name me the top 5 Accountants in the world.....the top 5 CEO's......the top 5 computer scientists.....the top 5 _______________.........and tell me they don't make as much (or relatively close to the same) as the top 5 Quarterbacks, the top 5 Shooting Guards......the top 5 pitchers.....
These athletes are at the top of their profession....the top 1-2% of their industry.....so they are paid accordingly.
Within that, let's look at hockey...why do they get paid less than football or basketball players? Because the demand for football is greater in this country. It's a better business venture and makes more money, ergo the employees (players) are compensated as such.
You want players to be paid less? Yell at the fans who pay for the tickets and the jerseys. But we couldn't do that, could we? Because then we are picking on the "middle class" and the working poor...much more socially acceptable to just say let's take money form the athletes because they have too much.Last edited by rock_lobster; 09-22-10 at 03:26 PM.

I've got to agree with Rock here. Professional athletes have a rare ability set, and are paid according to market forces. As for fairness, someone due to make money off of their skills, so why shouldn't it be them?
As for college scholarships, again, these kids are generally excellent at something, I'd say that that merits as much consideration as someone who was on the debate team or had great SAT scores. Maybe they should give more money for academics too, but how would you force that on them?

Rock - that might be a fair comparison - however here is one that I'd be interested to know.
Name the Top 5% of Teachers/Professors and show me that their compensation is even in the same bracket as those CEO and Athletes and Actors are in. Fact is you won't. What some people find obscene is that people (athletes and/or actors) create no lasting benefit to society aside from a temporary moment of entertainment. Whereas teachers/professors are charged with ensuring that future generations are able compete in the marketplace (including that of ideas).

Re: Dont worry its getting better lol
But is says something when people are defending the salaries of professional athletes, yet have no problem slamming blue collar workers and teachers who they think earn too much. (Not you Wicked, others here)
If they are a public university, it's very easy to force them. Legislate it.
