Re: Dont worry its getting better lol
Huh, i am going to assume you are joking and not tied into this emotionally for the love of ___ sport.
Its a useless profession. its entertainment, thats it. Instead of siting infront of the TV, everyone needs to find a hobby (watching tv is not a hobby), go and do something productive with their time. America spends way to much time watching television (and its just us with that problem).
Huh, ya so lets encourage the guy who can throw a ball and ignore the guy that might cure cancer....priorities....? College is about learning, what learning is there in throwing a ball? All you are contributing is instantanious, momentary entertainment for society. Compare that contribution to... teachers (i can name quite a few teachers, who CHANGED my life FOREVER, not just for the second im watching them on the tv)? Doctors (save lives), police, firefighters, scientists, ..... fuck even the bloke that fixes your toilet. Lets even it out with the rest of the career paths, look at the salery for an astronout, guy who really puts his life on the line (they have shitty saftey statistics). Why should children aspire to be anything but athletes? They are the ones with the easy route? Do it because you love it, take the HUGE money buffer off by taxing the piss out of them, leaving only the guys who do it for the love of the sport and not the money.
Now in regards to being good at something? Woop-de-do ball throwing? Go look at the available FULL RIDE (no those pathetic $500-$1000 scholarships are worth jack SHIT in repsect to paying a $40,000 tuition fee PER SEMESTER) scholarships for academics. Look for FULL RIDE scholarships for the best at computer science (there was 2-3 in the ENTIRE USA for 2 0 0 9 ), theirs jack shit for any real academic excellence. Sure their may be one or two, but its nothing in comparision to the huge fucking quantity of FULL ride scholarships that EVERY SCHOOL offers for sports.

No they also create jobs for people that do not have their talents. There has to be plants built to make their DVD's, warehouses to house them, workers to drive the equipment to bring them in and ship them out, stores to house their movies, truck drivers to deliver them and so forth and so on.
The top 5% of ditch diggers do not get paid as much either but they can choose a different profession. Ask just about any teacher and they will tell you that they became an educator because it was a calling and not for the money. I think teachers should be paid more than they do but not much more. Certainly not on par with some of the higher skilled professions.

2 points
1st (since ignored it the first time) Why do schools give a full ride to athletes (especially in football and Basketball) over Smarty pants? Because the Athlete will MAKE THE MONEY BACK. Big-10 schools can get 20 million a year in revenue just from Football. Does the kid who ends up curing cancer pay anything back to the school the entire time he is there? Uhhh....NO. So it is between "Give the athlete a full ride, and make most of that money and more back" or "Give the smart kid the money and be out that tuition for all 4 years (plus room and board, plus books etc)." It is all economics and for many schools they need that money to hire/pay teachers, give out scholarships to non-athletes etc. I'm not saying it is right, but that is how it works, and athletics does help to fund more academics then you want to admit.
2nd) You also like to make it sound as though "If you aspire to be an athlete, you'll be one and make millions!!" It ain't like that. Hell, look at baseball, there are guys out there that never even make it out of double A, and they spent their entire lives playing baseball. There are 120 schools in the country with a FBS football team, and probably at least 7200 people that spent their lives playing football and trying to be the best, and maybe 100 of them will go on to make millions of dollars playing sports? Often many of them actually go on to work in businesses and do other things then just play sports. And some people aren't just in it for the money, I'm not working towards a marketing major because it will make me rich, it is because I love it. The only people who really make it in professional sports are the ones that have the talent, the work ethic, and love the game.
Last thing, who says the guy who throws the ball can't become the one who cures cancer? I'm not saying all athletes are very smart (some are dumb as bricks) but you seem to want to write off anyone who plays sports as just "Some dumb jock that can't do anything"

A bit on this, I remember one of my business teachers in highschool made a fair point, while teachers don't get paid a lot, they also have 4-6 months of not teaching, So they get paid $30,000 for basically 6 months of work (or in other professions that would be about 60,000 dollars).

schools do give away academic scholarships though... i'm not sure how many compared to sports scholarships but i wouldn't be surprised if they were close or more
i knew at least two people at my school who got full ride scholarships for academics though there could have been more

Re: Dont worry its getting better lol
Far fewer - and i had a small academic and a small athletic scholar ship to the university I attended. And the academic was smaller than the athletic (even though I hit the school with a 3.9 GPA - which is not a common athlete GPA).
Personal anecdotes ..... tsk tsk tsk

I don't know about scholarships. My school practically hands them out for academics. I got my full ride (before my schizophrenia torpedoed it ) by applying with a 3.9 GPA (they didn't know most of my highschool classes were on a 5.0 scale) and a 1420 SAT. There are also plenty of scholarships out there that offer full rides that are nationwide things. They're just very competitive.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.
