Re: Idea to ease unemployment
People just dont want to hear opinons that differ from thier own, this has been proven time and time again.
To create jobs you need to create money, to create money you need to stop spending so much, to stop spending so much you need to cut back, to cut back you need to look at things you waste money on.
It's pretty fucking simple 2nd grade problem solving....Which furthers my point that the US government needs to go on "Are you smarter than a 5th grader"

Re: Idea to ease unemployment
Ummm, he wasn't referring to the "economy" being simple 2nd grade problem solving Hawg. You're purposely taking a silly extreme and casting that as Kraker's opinion. It would seem that he is stating that the concept of spending less than you bring in is a "simple 2nd grade problem solving..." and there's really not a lot to argue against from that standpoint. Spending less....good. Saving more...good. Continuing to spend borrowed money....bad (especially when you can't afford to pay back the loan)

Re: Idea to ease unemployment
No. Spend your way out of a recession. When it fails, point the finger. That's essentially the plan.
My question is, if we have so many people giving what seem to be great ideas, why can't the "brilliant" political minds of congress seem to latch on to those ideas? Either they know better than we do, or they are totally incompetent.......I'm sure you can guess which option of the two I think they are.....

Re: Idea to ease unemployment
Again, Keynes. When the economy is doing badly, increase government spending.
Government investment into infrastructure (better infrastructure = more efficient economy), R&D (keep our technological edge), and healthcare would be the most appropriate at this time. It puts people to work now, and ensures our economy is healthy in the long run.
Tax cuts are not as effective in stimulating the economy, which can easily be reasoned by the fact that the not all the money that people/businesses save from tax cuts is consumed. A certain percentage of the money is always saved. This means that a dollar of tax cuts is less stimulative than a dollar of government purchases, so we'd have to spend more on a tax cut to get the same effect as if the government just spent money directly into the economy. Some are willing to accept that, but then that seems to contradict the idea that the government should be more efficient with its money, as many people have asserted.
As to Kraker's point of high debt:
The goal of macro economic policy is not to balance the budget, it is to balance the economy (at 'full' employment), so talking about debt in a thread about unemployment isn't exactly relevant.
But, if we want to talk about it, then check out this chart (the second one on the image): File:USDebt.png - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Now think about what was happening in this country during the times when our debt was going up vs when it was going down. A summary would be: bad economy = more debt, good economy = less debt. Of course, other things, especially wars, factor into debt as well. But we were reducing debt during Vietnam, so I guess it must have just been our general economic policies at that time and the decade before that seemed to work towards debt reduction. How the 80s have changed us...Last edited by Madmax (Grape); 10-03-10 at 05:07 PM.

Re: Idea to ease unemployment
That's funny, I haven't seen an increase in jobs since Obama has been in office, nor since we started spending ass tons of money. Then again, I am in the field of accounting and finance....not ditch digger, highway building specialist or bridge engineer.......
All I know is this, you guys are saying we are doing the right thing by spending, but it hasn't gotten any better, and at the end of the day I sit here with 2+ years accounting/tax/finance experience just out of college, with no job.......

Re: Idea to ease unemployment
Obama came into office during a recession. Government spending prevented the market from bottoming out even lower than it currently is. Employment will not go away overnight, but government spending will quicken the overall recovery, vs. letting the market adjust itself.
Proof that government spending fixes the economy: World War II.
And you listed 3 jobs that all fall under rebuilding infrastructure. R&D requires very educated people, as does healthcare (in very diverse fields, I might add). I made sure to include different levels of education in my spending proposal, as well as different fields of study. I did not list all possible government investments that could be made however. Perhaps you have more to add?Last edited by Madmax (Grape); 10-03-10 at 06:31 PM.
