BERLIN (AFP) – Germany's attempt to create a multi-cultural society has failed completely, Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the weekend, calling on the country's immigrants to learn German and adopt Christian values.

Yeah, we should totally be more like Europe...................

The integration of Muslims has been a hot button issue since August when a member of Germany's central bank sparked outrage by saying the country was being made "more stupid" by poorly educated and unproductive Muslim migrants with headscarves.

A recent study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think tank showed around one-third of Germans feel the country is being "over-run by foreigners" and the same percentage feel foreigners should be sent home when jobs are scarce.

Nearly 60 percent of the 2,411 people polled thought the around four million Muslims in Germany should have their religious practices "significantly curbed."

I think it is more a case that Germany is becoming more like us. Some of those quotes remind me of, oh, a few historic events in Germany......

I was kind of poking fun, lol.

I was just curious what the people in this forum thought about it, since generally it's considered an invasion of civil liberties to do such things....that and some members here idolize Europe like there's no tomorrow.

Beside I think its stupid to basically say, "the should be Christians" and the bank leaders saying its just the muslims making the country stupid, it reminds me of the quote:

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

I agree. I'm all about letting people of any religion exercise their practice of said religion, unless it directly interferes with our countries laws.

Let's say for example Religion A, has several non intrusive practices (whatever they may be), but one of their practices includes sacrificing a child once every year (not that, that would happen). It's against our country's/state's laws to do so, ergo you cannot practice in that manner.

I will say this. If you're going to live in this country (the United States) you should be able to speak English pretty well. I can side with Merkel on that point.

I have nothing against wanting the migrants to learn the language, possibly offering free classes to help them learn (as it can be incredibly hard to learn a foreign language, especially when it has 0 relation with your own language). I don't think you have to speaking it well, but just enough you can get around without too much issue (a bit above basic).

I will say this. If you're going to live in this country (the United States) you should be able to speak English pretty well. I can side with Merkel on that point.

I think that it goes without saying that English is essential for ones success in this world and in the U.S. It’s the primary language in international business and global communication.And For those reason given is why it should and IS the primary language of the US.

And speaking ___(insert language here)___ fluently goes without saying either.

But I do believe if you live in the US you should, the very least be able to speak/understand Spanish.

I dont nessecarily disagree with what your saying. I will say it should not be mandatory but it is llike many things a skill that can be usefull. I wouldnt call myself fluent by any form of the word but i know enough to geet along in a bar in mexico and know when shit is being talked on a job site. Chim in once is a while after they have done it and learn to be quiet real quick. For some reason they seem to know english after that. It may be broken as hell but its there.
