Whether or not you like it doesn't change the fact that it can be used as a slur. I would imagine that nobody likes being called a "sand person."

But that is your choice.....just like I don't get pissy when someone calls me a Yankee. Plus....these are truly regional, and have nothing to do with race/ethnicity. We don't get to pick and choose what others are offended by. If it is used, and taken as a slur, we should handle it as such. People can call my German ass a Nazi or a Hun all day long, and I wouldn't be anything other than entertained....but that still doesn't make it right.

Put it this way......Could you stand in front of Vafa or Mafia (two of the nicest guys on the Planet) and refer to them as "Sand People" and think that you wouldn't be hurting their feelings or offending them? I know I couldn't, and most certainly wouldn't. Ever.

I tend not to give people the benefit of the doubt when they toss out an ethnic slur into a long, insulting diatribe about that group of people.
