Re: Energy Committee Chairman Candidate Says God Promised no More Catastrophic Climat
Motivations for people's actions and thoughts are very important, especially for politicians. If they use unsound reasoning, then they can never be relied on to make the right decisions because what they base their ideas on is not appropriate for the situation.
Here's a hypothetical situation.
A political figure makes the following statement:
"I believe that nothing should be done about global warming because it will hurt the US economy."
A different political figure draws the same conclusion:
"I believe that nothing should be done about global warming because the Bible says that the Earth is indestructable."
Both conclusions (that nothing should be done about global warming) are stupid with the amount of scientific data we have and the historical effects on even slight global temperature change. But at least the first person has a legitimate reason for his belief, which makes his statement less stupid/crazy.We can do better.

The effects of global warming are debatable, so let's use a topic that pretty much all of us can agree on.
Here's a hypothetical situation.
A political figure makes the following statement:
"I believe that 1+1=3"
A different political figure draws the same conclusion:
"God told me 1+1=3"
Who is smarter, and who is dumber?

You didn't give a justification for the first person's assertion. Everyone has a reason (whether it is logical or not) that they think a certain way. Without the reason for the first person's claim, I cannot answer your question. Perhaps they are using some new type of vector addition that they just discovered, or perhaps they are stating some type of relationship in nature. I cannot know, because there is no justification given for their conclusion.

I would say the guy that knowing puts his faith into something that is easily proven wrong just by adding 1+1 is the dumber. The other guy just might not be good at arithmetic, but at least isn't so intellectually lazy as to just believe what his faith tells him to believe, in this scenario "god told me 1+1=3".

Right, so even though we have all been taught since the age of 4 that 1+1=2 somehow if I just personally choose that it is 3 that is ok, but if I claim God told me then I must be a moron. Now I get it.

Well, 1+1 can equal 3 if you know a few mathematical tricks, but that's just semantics. Going to go take a physics test now...
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.
