Re: One reason to carry a firearm.
All I am going to say on this matter is that I treat everyone with a weapon, except people I know are law enforcement, as the same kind of threat, whether they are a "criminal" or a "responsible gun owner." I don't differentiate because to do so could be fatal. I won't trust most people who have weapons because I do not know them personally or their background. Personally, I feel no need to carry a weapon and will not do so. I also think the idea that if everyone had a gun the world would be a better place is absurd.

Re: One reason to carry a firearm.
I dont understand your definition of fear....To me, fear is being affraid of something...I lock my doors not because I'm affraid someone will break into my house, but because it makes someone who would want to do that, have to work a little harder, which means my pitbulls will hear them, which means they are going to die.
I do not wear my seatbelt because im "affraid" im going to crash, I wear it because if I ever do crash, at least I may have a chance to survive.
I carry car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, not because I'm affraid i will crash, or my house will burn down, or I will die, its because when and if that stuff does happen, I'm prepared....
I do not carry a gun because I'm "affraid" someone will rob me...I (used to) carry my gun because if someone ever were to rob me, at least I would have a fighting chance
It really baffels me that you do not see the difference in "fear" and preparation....

You lock your doors because someone might try to break in (you worded it differently, but basically boils down to that). If you didn't think someone could try to break in, would you lock your doors?
You wear your seatbelt because you might get into a crash. If there wasn't a risk of getting into a crash, would you wear your seatbelt?
You carry insurance because you might crash, your house might burn down, you might die. If there wasn't a risk of crashing, housing burning down, dying, would you still have the insurance?
Generally you are preparing for something to happen, if I'm preparing for someone to try to break in, then am I not afraid someone will try to break into my house? If I wasn't afraid of it, why would I be preparing for it to happen?
Since Sauso is here, and supposedly Canada isn't as gun happy as the U.S., why do you (Sauso) think that people in Canada don't feel the need for guns compared to in the U.S.?

its an emotion, and people act on emotions. I would argue a lot of people carry life insurance because they are afraid of what will happen to family etc. when they die. Hell the whole life insurance market advertises towards that with there ads of "what will happen to your family if you die? How will they pay for your funeral? get life insurance and your safe."
Even seatbelts, the advertising is based around "look what will happen to you if you don't wear a seat belt!" or "If you don't wear a seat belt, the cops are going to get you!" I highly doubt most peoples thought when putting on their seat belt is "Well I just want to be prepared in the case of a crash" its more "What if I get into a crash? I could die, i better put my seat belt on."
