Schedule 1 Ban on JWH-018 and others going into effect on Dec. 24th

I looked around these forums and I hadn't seen any discussion on this yet.

    For some background on this:

On 24 November 2010, the DEA announced that it would make JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-200, CP-47,497 and cannabicyclohexanol, which are often found in synthetic cannabis, illegal using emergency powers. They will be placed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, within a month of the announcement, and the ban will last for at least a year.
Synthetic cannabis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For more information, read this article from The Huffington Post and this article from CNN.

I talked to someone about this and apparently the root cause of this is there being traces of acetone found in K2 (though I've read elsewhere that this is a myth); and apparently K2 exclusively. The acetone is used to dissolve one of the key chemicals sprayed onto the herbs to create the final product, typically RSC-8 (which isn't being banned by the way). However, though there are not suppose to be any traces of acetone left when the RSC-8 is dissolved into liquid form for spraying, there apparently has been anyway. Unfortunately, acetone is poisonous and the result has been people going to the hospital and poison centers after consumption of K2.

The same person also told me that the some of the German makers of these forms of synthetic cannabis will be putting out a new product near the beginning of next year the doesn't contain the banned substances (e.g. JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-200, CP-47,497 and cannabicyclohexanol) with the result being a "less potent" product.

From a personal standpoint and from someone who hasn't tried K2 but has tried both Spice and Serenity, I really don't know where I stand on this. I think that states, cities, towns, and counties were doing just fine on their own on deciding whether or not they wanted to ban these products (see the list of activity found in the source of the quote above, relinked here); just like they do with Salvia. However, I do think there is a little bit of an issue in regards to the lack of research done concerning health risks on the chemicals sprayed onto the herbs which creates the various forms of synthetic cannabis; though I assume that research will be done during the one-year ban. I had heard some news concerning hospital trips for people consuming one of the forms of synthetic cannabis (though I'm not sure which one) but for the most part all I've really heard is that unless moderation is emphasized with consumption then anxiety/panic attacks do happen (I've met some who have experienced it).

And, honestly, I think just making the sale of the product limited to persons 18 years old, or even 21 years old, and older might solve a lot of the issues that the government has with these products. From the articles I've read, it seems like one of their biggest issues has to do with minors being able to purchase the products since they're sold as incenses.

    Thoughts on this?

Since this is not a banned substance yet, I assume this is fair game to discuss. If there are issues with discussing this, I do apologize and understand if this thread is removed or locked.

I highly doubt acetone has anything to do with it. Acetone is about as toxic as vinegar, when all is said and done. Acetone's LD50 is 5800mg/kg, which means that a 200lbs. man would need to drink, straight, just more than 6 cups of acetone to have a 50% chance of dying. I doubt that the (possible, as acetone is highly volatile and readily evaporates) residue on a product does anything to anyone at all.

It sounds more like the Anti-Fun Patrol catching up with modern developments and making sure that no one is enjoying themselves.

Yeah, I couldn't find any source that states what the individual told me. I found numerous "How To" guides that offered instructions both on how to create these products at home with and without acetone since acetone is poisonous (I think one even said "extremely poisonous") but nothing along the lines of what the individual said. Perhaps the combination of acetone with the other chemicals is what is dangerous?

Unfortunately, this is probably the case. At least the ban is only for a year (with a possible six month extension after the year) and at least they're supposedly going to be researching the products during that time.

This really just reeks of pot-fear. It looks like pot and has been reported that the effects of the consumption of the products are similar to pot. So, because pot is illegal, this should be illegal too.

I think your math may be off. I dont come up with nearly that amount.

I know working with that shit blows. Go to far one time with it and you get instant headaches just by a sniff of it.

Stupid metric system. 3 cups. The point remains. You need a lot of exposure to have any effect at all. The majority concern with acetone is its ability to dehydrate/ remove the natural oils of your skin, causing rashes, and the obvious inhalation hazards (as it is entirely volatile at room temperature/pressure, it can readily replace/remove oxygen from confined spaces at high concentrations). Not really ingestion.

I can agree with the metric system being stupid. I keep coming up with .20 oz. which isnt much at all.

How are you converting to such a high number? I've been dividing 5800 mg by 1000 to come up with grams. Then just converting to ounces. Did i miss a step or something? Its been awhile since i've had to do shit like this.
