i used to deliver chinese food and drove slow down neighborhood streets all the time as long as there was no one behind me.
Again, let's try not to debate. I'm simply stating my opinon to his question based on my training and experience. I understand alot of the things I say people may not agree with. I just thought I would help some people understand some things from the other end of the spectrum.

one time i reported that there was an abandoned car in the parking lot of my neighborhood over the phone. when i approached the police officer with my mother to explain that the car has been there for a while and other stuff i noticed while it was there he grasped his gun and told me to step back. as a police officer why would you do this?

Cops are trained to be suspicious. If you trust everyone, then sooner or later you might get caught off guard.

Not knowing where you lived, or your neighborhood, it is really hard to know why.

I am not a cop yet, taking skills this summer.

Cops worry about traffic alot because we can deter alot of crime just by doing that. Numerous times we catch drugs, guns, illegal weapons, kidnap victims, wanted people, drunk drivers, etc from traffic stops.

Most likely in this scenario, your friend was suspect of driving under the influence of something. It is not a normal thing for people to drive 10 under the speed limit, and is considered a suspicous activity. Alot of people drive slow when they are looking for houses to break into, are on drugs, are drunk, etc. Also, driving to slow is a traffic hazard. I know you said it was an empty road, but you never know.

My guess is your kid got a ticket because the cop pulled him over, realized there was nothing criminal going on, and simply cited him for driving too slow.
Fair enough. How come cops dont sit or drive residentials more then they drive or sit in high traffic areas if the goal is to deter crime?

If the goal is to deter crime why do cops feel the need to hide their cruiser while running radar?

    Re: Ask a Cop...

    From my perspective atleast.

    1. The job of police is not just running after criminals. There are many parts to the job, on foot chases is not a big part of it.

    2. The goal is not necessary deterrence, as it has been shown to not be that effective. It does help a little, but is not universally effective. The ticket is supposed to be more of a deterrence than the actual presence itself. Should follow traffic laws anyways (no matter how much you think are a "good driver") because it affects more than just yourself.

    Re: Ask a Cop...

How come cops can change lanes without a turn signal but i cant?
How come they can speed and i cant?
How come they're worried about me being distracted by my cell phone as they're typing on their laptop?
How come they run tags when no law has been broken?
How come they can continue being a cop even with a suspended lisence?
How come they can park on a median where its clearly signed no vehicles in the median?
How come they use airplanes and helocopter to run traffic? Shouldn't that equipment be use for emergencies only?
How come if i have faulty equipment i get a ticket and they dont?
How come there is a law stating no blue or red lights on a nonemergency vehicle yet all tail lights are red? Theres actually a story behind that one.

I can continue but i really just felt like fucking with you for a minute.
