Re: A mock slave auction?
Is it that wrong? We reenact all kinds of wars and other things for educational purposes; I believe the idea of this exercise is to show how denigrating and humiliating slavery was. Apparently it worked too well and the lesson is missed in favor of other problems. His discomfort with it is OK, and perhaps he should be allowed to not participate. If the kids made fun of him later it sounds like they have other problems, not this silly lesson. How many of these lessons have taken place (since the article states it is a state school board required lesson, the whole state of Ohio, for how many years) that resulted in this?
What about disections? Vivisections? Some people are offended by that; should we disallow that method of instruction as well? It is a reenactment.
I hear some of you calling people names for being unable to tolerate a little bit of tough-stuff, why is this so different? One student is sensitive, and told his mom such.
Really the problem sounds like he was made fun of later; do you think he was never made fun of before this lesson?

Re: A mock slave auction?
Feel free to show kids Amistad or talk about slave auctions, but auctioning a 10 year old black kid off as a slave, with his classmates going up to feel his body up to see how strong he is and how good a slave he'd be, is wrong. Do I really have to go into the reasons why that is a terrible idea for a lesson? I was really thinking that this could be one of the few things that we could all look at and say "You know, that is just wrong for a number of very obvious reasons."

Re: A mock slave auction?
Yea, as far as it pertains to the original post. I do not agree that this form of education serves a purpose. The teacher/school could have had all the best intent in the world but that does not change the fact that it is a fucked up way to teach a lesson.
