Re: A depressing situation
I'm beginning to think religion is a sign of insanity.
After all, who would believe a story without any physical proof? Whats the difference between the mass suicide behind Avatar, and this, or the bible for that matter? A book? Thats it? Well shit... you know Avatar had a manuscript too.... So now, there is no difference.

Re: A depressing situation
Nope, this quote wicked posted has to do with rape. "because she did not cry out" is clear evidence of that. There was no such thing as "willingly had sex with another man". Women of that day wouldn't dream of betraying their masters. That quote, and the severe punishment portrayed are not in practice in our society today, even the concept of marriage is losing ground. Our society is getting over those ridiculous notions, but others are not showing any signs of improvement.

Re: A depressing situation
Wait...so how is that rape?
"Because she did not cry out" sounds a lot like she consented. I would think that if she were being raped a woman would "cry out". But you appear to be the scholar and know the concepts of that day so please enlighten me. If there was no distinction between willingly having sex and rape then why would the verse say she would be killed for not crying out as opposed to just sleeping with the guy?
So please explain how that bible verse condones killing a woman who was raped.

That was from the King James Version, which just doesn't use the word "rape," but the passage is very much about rape. Here are some other versions:
New Century Version:
23 If a man meets a virgin in a city and has sexual relations with her, but she is engaged to another man,24 you must take both of them to the city gate and put them to death by throwing stones at them. Kill the girl, because she was in a city and did not scream for help. And kill the man for having sexual relations with another man's wife. You must get rid of the evil among you.
25 But if a man meets an engaged girl out in the country and forces her to have sexual relations with him, only the man who had sexual relations with her must be put to death.26 Don't do anything to the girl, because she has not done a sin worthy of death. This is like the person who attacks and murders a neighbor;27 the man found the engaged girl in the country and she screamed, but no one was there to save her.
23 If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
24 then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them to death with stones; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor's wife: so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.
25 But if the man find the damsel that is betrothed in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die:
23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.
25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.

Re: A depressing situation
Sorry menoske, Imisnew, i swear it made sense when i wrote it last night..... i need to stop posting after midnight.
Your right. The passage deals more with, A) the infidelity of the woman, and by not screaming out essentially confirming the affair was intentional. And B) one man using the property of another man without consent.
Sorry Wicked, after reviewing it with a clear mind, it appears the passage does not support the killing of a raped woman.
