Part of the permit is so they have your info so they can audit you for sales and income taxes. That is usually how the "business permit" works. It shouldn't cost that much, but seeing as how budgets are these days, well, $300 for a state/municipal EIN assignment does not surprise me. Having served as business officer for various fan-run conventions, I usually have to get exemptions from the various states/counties/cities so that they do not inevitably send revenue services people to harass our artists and guests who are selling their own stuff over the weekend. (we make registered dealers who are in the dealer's room register with the appropriate people though). Finally, lemonade stand also counts as food services and that has a lot more restrictions. They can be shut down by the health inspector's office without having the proper operating licenses too.

Based on the article, I agree with the county assessment. It suggests/implies other vendors actually tried to get a permit for the same or similar location and were denied on traffic and safety grounds, and suddenly these "country bumpkins" decided that "hey here's an empty spot lets set up shop here" without first doing the research and then later failing to successfully negotiate with county officials to continue the business. Article doesn't specifically mention on whose property the stand was setup on. If the stand was setup on the grounds of the club, that's the club's private property and the county would have no reason to interact with them but if it was on public property (a public road leading up to or in the vicinity of the club) then that's county property and the county reserves the right to permit or not permit the stand to be there. The short article implies the latter case was true.

On a day to day basis i would agree its stupid but this was an event going on. I have to side with the country worker on this. Now if it was just any average day and a kid set one up then i would agree with their right to do so. I also have to think seeing as all the money was going to charity that this probably wasn't the kids idea to begin with.

Pretty stupid, douchey, lame, retarded, _________________. I would never have fined them, but if you read the article, you'll see the county inspector told them numerous times to stop, and they didn't listen.
It's dumb that they can't sell lemonade, but don't be surprised when you get fined after ignoring officials after a few times of them telling you to stop.
Parents needed to be smarter.

Requiring a business permit isn't near as dumb as requiring a building permit to put up a fence in your own yard like they do around here... The article is pretty vague, but if you don't listen, kind deserve to get fined. Also, as the event was going on, changes everything, its not some kid selling something on a random summer's day, it was planned to produce, and "unusually large"
