Re: Rick Perry is a raging idiot.
Hmm but what Mafioso said is correct. There are LOTS of things science does not know yet. But science isn't in the business of guessing or making things up. The best thing a scientist can say is "I don't know"
Is there an afterlife? I don't know. Is there a god? I don't know. What is the meaning of existence? I don't know. And I will continue to not know until the day that evidence is brought to the table regarding these things.
We have to learn that it's okay to not know. It's scary not knowing, but it's exciting too.

Re: Rick Perry is a raging idiot.
Yea I agree with that, and I watched "Through the wormhole with Morgan Freeman" and that was their explanation. I am not a very religious person but I just don't like how other people act as if they have all the answers. As for religion, if there is a different level of consciousness science would not be able to analyze it. Science is constantly evolving and science may have a different explanation for the life on earth in the future. Again, science can't even answer the most basic question. What is the origin of life? Science can prove that we evolved but cannot prove how we first started.

Re: Rick Perry is a raging idiot.
What is the origin of life? Science has answered that question. If you mean instead "What is the origin of existence or reality itself." Then you would be correct that it has not been answered, but you'd certainly be wrong to call that "The most basic question." In fact I would contend that is perhaps the single most difficult question ever posed.
Keep in mind that while there are questions still unanswered by science, scientists are still the ONLY people actually trying to answer them. We will continue to learn about our natural world and our origins over time. Perhaps one day in the very distant future this insane reality will finally make sense.

With questions like this, I always apply Occam's razor. What's more likely, that this is the hallucination of a degrading brain, or that magic exists? The fact that we can't explain something isn't in and of itself support for magic.
Also remember that creationism is not believed by all religions. There are other religions such as Buddhism, who do not contradict evolution or the study of science. Just remember that science can only measure, evaluate and test things in are life but that doesn't mean that their isn't a different level of consciousness.
Edit: Also remember that scientist once thought the earth was flat.In a thousand years from now scientist may or may not have a different explanation for life on earth. And actually the origin of life on earth is yet to be discovered.

We also used to believe in witches and would conduct witch tests by throwing women into the water. If they ended up drowning, they weren't a witch. If they could swim... A WITCH! We also used to try to heal the sick by "blood letting".
While we are not as stupid as we used to be 240 years ago, we are still pretty darn stupid sometimes.

Re: Rick Perry is a raging idiot.
You say that, but I doubt it's what you REALLY think. In other words, you don't practice what you preach. I bet you that multiple times just this week, maybe even this day, you've told somebody something as a matter of fact.
In everything we do as modern humans we utilize scientific theories and knowledge. You wouldn't jump off a cliff because you accept the theory of gravity. You wouldn't sleep in a furnace because you understand the affect that extreme heat will have on the molecules which form your body. People are perfectly comfortable with science, with the laws of nature and the way things work. People aren't bothered by using scientific knowledge to improve the comfort and efficiency of their existence... up until they get to the theory of evolution.
Suddenly when presented with this well-founded theory (Which has arguably MORE evidence behind it than gravity) they become stone-faced skeptics.
Why is it you accept science up until this specific theory? And why is it that religions feel so threatened by it? Evolution has nothing to do with HOW life was created. That is an entirely different theory. Evolution is not incompatible with most religions.
