a lot more bespoke options are available with the 750iL that you can't get on the 740iL. Also, the M70/M72 (the V12) is a totally different level of smoothness. You can balance a coin on it's edge on the intake manifold of that engine and START the car and the coin won't tip over.
Power delivery is much different too. V12s just feel good.
The new Twin Turbo V12 in the F01 760 is retarded...

a V12 buyer is normally a special person... someone who really looks for a certain refinement that others just don't understand... are those people normally uptight douchenozzles? yes... yes they are.

    The new Focus is fantastic

The previous US-only one? not so much:

The rest of the world got a trend setting, high quality vehicle (actually the same car as the Mazda3 [Ford C1 architecture])
The US decided to continue using the once-good-but-not-anymore C170 architecture as a cost cutting measure. It's not an AWFUL car, but the Mazda3 was MUCH better.
The Jetta is a hit or miss kind of car... I was a big VW junkie... but the latest crop of VWs isn't all that good (unless you get the 2.0T powered models or the TDIs) They reliability isn't great either.
The latest batch of Civics are just BORING though... not fun to drive, but dead reliable... same with the Corolla (except even MORE boring)

was that dumb or harmless or good advice?

i don't know as much about cars as i wished but i feel like nowadays safety/technology/car manufacturing is so refined and so close in terms of quality from one company to the next that shit if it was made within the last few years especially they all drive pretty well and are dependable
Not dumb, just misinformed. If you had asked me in 2001, I'd say the Focus was a pretty good car, but in 2010, it was the same car as the 2001 car...

I'd suggest a Mazda3 over the US-spec Ford Focus (C170). The NEW Focus (2012 Model Year) is a great car though. It's a global car, so the whole world got it and it's pretty solid and has a lot of great features. It's great on gas too.
The NEW Mazda3 is not shared with the new Focus... it's a Mazda modification of the OLD Mazda3/Rest-of-World Focus (C1). It's rather good though. It's done with their new SkyActive initiative. Real interesting technology across the entire car (chassis, engine, transmission).

The new Chevy Sonic and Cruze are great too with the 1.4T engine
The new Dodge Dart with the 1.4T engine also LOOKS to be a contender, but it's not yet available (soon though)
I would also have him look at the Ford Fiesta, anything by Kia and Hyundai in his price range (they're all really good now...)
The Veloster by Hyundai is really neat.
the Fiat 500 is also pretty cheap and a LOT of fun. Reliability in the US is an unknown right now, but the rest of the world has had good luck with it.

I'm not sure how big a car he's looking for... some of these recommendations are pretty small (Mazda2, Fiesta, Kia Rio5, Hyundai Accent, Fiat 500)

You tell me how much he wants to spend and how big a car he wants and how old he's considering and I'll tell you what he should get.

I drive right now a '90 Pontiac Sunbird with a 5 speed, fun thing to drive. Isn't fast by any standard, but I like it. I have been toying with the thought of maybe trying to turn it into a rally racer. But it's front wheel drive, not rear, sadly.

Don't know about chapel but here's my answer. Buying new or used, part 1 (Series 17, Episode 3) - BBC Top Gear

Re: I drive a Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon... I'm 30...

wow thanks for the detailed info

yea i'm not in that class of auto-shoppers...YET!

see that is something i should've done more research on. when i said "newer cars" i didnt' know i'd have to start with a 2012 focus because the 2010 was basically the same as the 2001 architecture-wise. he hasn't actually pulled any triggers so i will def copy/paste most of your advice in an email to him lol.

i think his price range is more in the used car range though like 11 to 14k and he doesn't want a shitty looking yaris or a girly corolla. he also needs 4 doors so no to the veloster, the new scion, etc. he doesn't drive stick so auto tranny is fine.

i just gave him basic advice that he should, if he cares more about bargain-warranty-price than other factors, get a used american car 2010 on but i see now i have to be specific with certain models. i didn't mention nissans because they keep getting uglier and they are bargain horsepower but he drives like morgan freeman in driving miss daisy so speed is less important than fuel economy.

he def doesn't want any of the newer euro/china rip-offs. i mean yea he'd drive a mini cooper but that's b/c they are like the most fun FWD cars ever...plus they're like double his price range. i told him kia is a good option but i guess we didn['t explore it much b/c they don't have the cache as some of these other companies. the mazda3 sounds awesome new but it's out of his price range if i'm not mistaken.

oh crap i just googled 2012 ford fiesta. it's out of his price range but not that much and it's new and it looks perfect for his needs.

    that was fun thanks

i drove a 2007 scion tc (the first version ) through new york/new jersey winters and experienced just how much i despise FWD. not an awful car btw though was overpriced by like 3k at least.

god i wish i lived in areas that had more (legal or illegal) racing type crap for me to partake in

Syracuse has some illegal street racing everyweekend, My buddies race there all the time. I havent made the trip yet cause quite frankly my wagon isnt ready for that yet, However that might all change anyways, I just found a 71 Monte Carlo for a Real good price that i might pick up.
