Why you should always turn your lights off.
I was just sitting here and noticed something smelled like it was burning. At first i thought it was just a cigarette butt in an ash tray. Then i noticed it was stinking for longer then it should. I go looking and find the bathroom is full of smoke. The damn light fixture shorted out. Luckily the only damage is a 50 dollar light fixture and an odor thats going to be around for a bit. Definitely glad i was home for it.

Or you could do the intelligent thing and not over-bulb you fixture and clean the fan.
... Then again, as an electrician i'd almost prefer if you wouldn't so I can keep collecting service fees ...~The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all worlds. The pessimist fears it true.

Or as an electrician you could consider that wiring was about 60 to 70 years old and the fluorescent lamp in it has no determined date of install. That coupled with a high humidity environment could have degraded the wiring insulation. In my effort to be lazy i replaced all the wiring with the exception of about 8 feet in that room going to the light from the switch.
Next time before mentioning someone is being unintelligent maybe consider you dont know the entire situation. Like maybe that it was strictly a light (no fan) and that you really have no idea what my electrical experience is. I've been in construction for 16 years and am capable of building this place from the ground up. I just prefer not to do electrical and plumbing but as i said i rewired this entire building including replacing the breaker box.
In short it had nothing to do with the size of the bulb in the lamp. The ballast shorted and started over heating. I was lucky i actually caught it before a fire actually broke out.

Don't get your panties in a bunch sir. My comment was intended to be lighthearted. You mentioned nothing about a fluorescent in your original post so I assumed the fixture was a typical edison base, which coincidentally the number one problem of those type of fixtures is owners over bulbing the fixture (but I digress,) so I assumed the scenario I run into commonly. A poster shortly after you mentioned fires derived from fans, so I incorporated them into my statement. Glad you have everything under control. No need to be jumping down my throat as I wasn't attempting to insult you, just making a gibe about the condition I find most of the two fixtures in question in.
On the related topic, the bane of my existence is plumbing and sheet rock. I can do just about everything under the sun otherwise, but my unfounded paranoia about the latter two usually leads me to overthinking the task at hand or screwing up and having to redo it anyways. I prefer to bring in others and play assistant for those tasks nowadays.~The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all worlds. The pessimist fears it true.

No offense but you came into the thread and said and i quote...
"Or you could do the intelligent thing and not over-bulb you fixture and clean the fan. "
Without asking a single question i might add. Wiring a home a picking a bulb is no large challenge to an ordnancemen. Sarcasm and light humor can be easily lost in a forum due to the lack of inflection. However its all good.
