    Selling a car, need guidance

Since I bought a new truck I have to sell my old truck, but i'm not sure what to expect to get out of it.

    Vehicle info:
2001 Ford F-150 XL fleet truck
    V6 - 198,000 miles
    8' bed (no extended cab)
    White, grey cloth interior
    manual windows and locks.
5 speed automatic with OD option
    Has a hitch for towing
    Bed is spray lined
    Truck box included

The reason I'm unsure is because I was looking on Craigslist for a similar truck and everybody was asking for quite a bit more than what the Kelly Blue book says the value falls around.

My questions to you are, how much should I ask and what should I accept at minimum?

    Please, only serious replies.

    Thanks,
    jmw

Re: Selling a car, need guidance

I just sold my car and god what I wanted so I can speak to this. Remember just because people are asking for that much doesn't mean they are getting it. If I were you I would use the following websites:

Car Prices, Used Car Value, Book Value | NADAguides | NADA Book Price, Car Book Value, Specs, NADA Trade In Value & Vehicle Pricing | NADA Book Prices & Car Cost Guides | NADA Car Value, Car Book Appraisal Value, Owner Costs, NADA Auto Value Appraisa
Official Kelley Blue Book New Car and Used Car Prices and Values
New Cars, Used Cars, Car Reviews and Pricing - Edmunds.com

I would compare the private seller prices you find on each site, and come up with what you think is a reasonable price somewhere in the middle of any differences you see. Post your car on Craigslist with a good description at that price, OBO (Or Best Offer). Also, know ahead of time how much you would take for the car as an offer and stick to it. If the price you are offering is lower than the other ads on Craigslist, you'll get a shit ton of calls on it, and it will sell fast. When you show the car, if you can, show it at a location away from your home, at a target parking lot or something. If a buyer wants to meet you halfway to where they are, a local police station parking lot is a great place to meet - if the person is dishonest or has ill intent, they will have a problem with that, and you can blow them off. Ride with the potential buyer on any test drive.

When you sell the car, be sure to find a good seller's agreement online to protect yourself from the buyer trying to come back with the car once you sell it. You will also need the form for application for new title, because there is a part the seller of the vehicle has to fill out and sign. You don't want the buyer having to come back to you for that later.

Take only cash, cashier's check or money order (or paypal) for payment. On the checks and money order, call the bank briefly to verify that the check is real. Also, last, be sure to file a Vehicle Transfer Notification to let the state know you have sold the car. Otherwise you might be held liable for the new driver's activity, say at a stoplight camera for example.

    Hope this helps.

An important thing to note is the wear on the tires...especially with autos going for under 2k$.

Seller's agreement. Tell me more about this. Is this like a bill of sale statement that goes along the lines of "I _____ of ___ county, Texas for and in consideration of ______ and other considerations to me in hand paid by _______ the receipt for which is hereby acknowledged, have bargained, sold and delivered, and by these presents do sell and delivery unto the said ______ in the county of _____ the following vehicle: 2001 Ford F-150 VIN# XXX Lic# xxx Signed _____ Date____" etc?

I'm uncertain what the Lic# means. I assume they are referring to the plates but I intend to remove those, the registration sticker as well.

Other than that, I have the transfer notification form and the title application. I also have the title which says on the back that I have to give the purchaser the title, application, and a current license receipt, but I'm not sure what a license receipt is. Any ideas?

That first site you linked says:
Rough trade-in -$50 (i'd have to pay someone $50 to take it, lol)
    Average trade-in $750
    Clean Trade-in $1375
    Clean Retail $3400

The third link is suggesting a private party value of $2057 for clean, and $1315 for average. I'm unsure which to lean towards.

A seller's agreement is exactly that, a bill of sale. You can look them up online for a good one. Also, the license receipt is the registration receipt. You can let the plates go with the car, and you really don't need to remove the registration sticker either. When you register a new car you get new plates anyways.

Based on the prices you mentioned I would ask for $2000 and don't take less than $1600, assuming that pricing is lower than the other similar trucks listed, and assuming the truck is in good shape.

If that price lower than the competition it should sell fast.
