Well I wouldn't think it would be either. But on the flip side, I enjoy spending more time in middle earth, so if I can spend 18 hours watching films for it then thats fine with me. I didn't read the hobbit so I don't know if scenes in the movie that seemed a bit streched were simply steam rolled the make them longer or if that just how it went down. I know some people are up in arms about the singing, which I can understand from someone who hasn't read anything by Tolkien. But he wrote alot of songs. And almost all of them were cut from the LOTRs films. So I take no issue with it.
The end of the first film did feel less like a cliff hanger and more like a commercial break. Which sucks, but then again that was what we got with the Fellowship. I lucked out and watched the 3rd film in the theaters and didn't have to wait a year for the commercial to end.Dispatch the DooM

Re: Tolkien 911
Saw the Hobbit this past Sunday. Huge fan of the books. Have read them all numerous times. Favorite is actually the Silmarillion.
Enjoyed the Hobbit movie. Though it was too long. 3 movies on one book is a bit much.
Love the Silmarillion though. Such a deep backstory that he created.

I saw the Hobbit opening night and I have mixed feelings about it. I loved the acting and the characters, and I love the book...but it seems like Jackson's goals are a bit too ambitious for the tone he's trying to set and the speed at which they are cranking them out. The movie was good but in my opinion I thought the CG was pretty bad at most points. When they were escaping the mines and running from the goblins, it felt like I was watching a saturday morning cartoon. Granted the tone of the Hobbit is supposed to be more lighthearted and fantastical, but the movie seemed like it was constantly fighting itself striving for both epic and light-hearted. I think it's possible to meet both of those and I think Peter Jackson totally could...but he didn't this time. I think given another year, the quality of the CG could have been SOOOO much better.
*SPOILER*
When they showed Smaug's eye at the end...and the white goblin? and the goblin king? Those were some of the most poorly animated characters I've even seen in a blockbuster movie of this caliber. Regardless, I'm still really excited for the next two and I know they will be great...but this movie really missed the mark on some key aspects that I think could have been remedied with just more time. I hope their close deadlines don't hinder the quality of the movies because they have so much going for them.
