Merril Hoge: 'Tebow as phony as a three dollar bill'

    What a tool.

I watched Hoge do this several times yesterday ... I kinda got the feeling he was projecting his own failures in his loser career. I'll finish commenting later ... when the season is better for being more ... blunt.

Yea I really don't see the problem with it. He may have been a little heated...but I get it to a point. As far as Hoge "projecting his own failures" I really just don't get that opinion...He was a 10th round pick who was a solid contributor for 7 years. I don't see how that's a failure. But...if anyone on that set had the right to make the argument it was Hoge...up until his career was ended due to multiple concussion induced brain trauma he played RB,FB and on all ST units.

Hoge, was an okay fb. He was nothing "special." His career was unremarkable. That is the reason for my comment. I am aware of the concussions and his additional battle with cancer after football.

However, Hoge is being a total ass with respect to Tebow. Tebow was screwed the moment the Jets picked him up. The HC made it clear that he didn't want anything to do with Tebow. Some of Tebow's teammates openly ridiculed him. All year ... ALL FN YEAR ... Tebow played the good teammate. Now, when it comes time to bench the starter and Tebow (purportedly the 2nd string QB) is told ... no ... you'll only be in for ST and the wildcat. Yeah, Tebow has every right to be pissed.

Hoge seems to forget that Tebow's "worst" was good enough to get the Broncos into the playoffs last year. Sanchez "best," well ... we see where they are now. For Hoge to blast Tebow for getting upset and then further ridicule his abilities as a passer, it smacks of ignorance and/or envy. I think Hoge has a hard on for Tebow for some reason and I think it is colored green.

I used to actually like Hoge. Clearly, I was mistaken ... Hoge is an asshole.

As I said, Hoge was a 10th round pick. Playing football for 7 years as a 10th round pick is an accomplishment.

Tebow was screwed the moment he was drafted in the NFL. That Bronco's team is loaded...it would have gone to the playoffs no matter who was QBing. The defense is very good, they have very good skill position players, and a solid offensive line that opens holes for it's RBs. Literally any QB in football could have had as much success, if not more.

He seriously wouldn't even be a story if ESPN didn't force their folks to talk about him constantly. Tebow mania is seriously ESPN generated bullshit...can't remember who it was that left ESPN for another company but he had an interview essentially saying he was sick of being forced to talk about all the stupid non-football related bullshit Tebow does.

You can't say that though Payton makes Denver a different team you can't deny it. Yeah they had everything else good but I guarantee if you put another QB like say Matt Shaub they would not be doing what they are doing.

The reason Tebow's not getting the nod as the starting QB is the same reason the Broncos dumped him on someone else this offseason. Tebow's not a real QB. He doesn't have the accuracy for it. He's essentially a RB with the ability to throw the ball better than most RBs. And before you reference how he took the Broncos to the playoffs, his defense took the Broncos to the playoffs and Demaryius Thomas beat the Steelers. The best you can say about Tebow is he didn't fuck it up. I guarantee if you put any halfway-decent QB on that team last year they would've won more games during the regular season, and beaten the Steelers before OT started. Might've even won additional playoff games. Broncos were that deep last year.

Also, while Hoge may have gone a bit overboard he has valid points. Tebow's built a giant reputation based upon "I'll do whatever the team needs." He's sung that mantra since the day he was drafted, so to all of a sudden throw a hissy fit because he's not getting the starting nod is a big blow to that reputation. When you've built a rep as a "team guy", then doing something selfish like that is extremely out of character and it's going to stand out and be called out.

Sure Peyton made a difference this year, but we're talking about last year lol. And of course if you replace Peyton Manning with Matt Schaub they won't be doing the same thing, they're not the same QB I may hate Peyton with every fiber of my being for being an uninteresting robot who relies on the hurry-up to simplify defenses for him, but he's still one of the great QBs.

No doubt. I expect Manning would have that effect on all but 5 other teams in the league.

Seven unremarkable year are seven unremarkable years, that is what Hoge had ... nothing more. Tebow may well not be an NFL caliber QB, but so far that is just opinion. The last time he started, he took his team to the playoffs. Now, what exactly has Sanchez done? ... and Sanchez is an "NFL QB"? There were many people that thought Brady wasn't an "NFL" caliber qb.

The viability of Tebow as an NFL QB is debatable. However, the snide comment that Tebow has "finally" shown his "true" colors is nothing but crap. Tebow had done or not done whatever his team has asked of him, knowing that he is being screwed and disrespected all the while. He finally says "wtf" and that is proof that he never was a team player? Please ... Hoge is a bitter little troll baby.

Sanchez made it to the AFC championship game twice, and tied for second for most road victories in the postseason by a QB. If you want to judge by "leading team to playoffs," then Sanchez has done way more then Tebow did.

When Tebow came in, he rode that defense hard, if I recall correctly like majority of his wins were comebacks after the offense sucked most of the game. The other argument was always the other QB (drawing a blank now, Orton maybe?) did terrible but when Tebow came in he won, thus=Super QB! The defense also played awful prior though. Now one could argue maybe they didn't play as hard for him or whatever, but can't be denied Tebow got A LOT of help.

For that matter so did Sanchez in his runs, the Jets didn't get so far those 2 years because of Sanchez, you can see that now pretty obviously. But if you want to go by "well he won!" then Sanchez is easily the better QB then Tebow anyways.

I was going to make a similar point to what Red Lizard said, but the bastard beat me to it

Sanchez is a legitimate NFL QB....a backup-quality QB, but still an NFL QB. And as Red pointed out, going by your measure of a QB (wins and playoffs), Sanchez is literally twice the QB that Tebow is because not only did Sanchez make the playoffs twice, he won multiple games and reached the AFC Championship twice.

Both QBs relied extremely heavily on not just their defense but on strong running games as well. The difference was that during Tebow's extended starting streak in 2011, he completed 46.5% of his passes for 1,729 yards and only 12 TDs. Sanchez beat the completion percentage and yards his rookie year, and all 3 categories his second.
