Yep with the right torque converter and shift kit an auto can be just as much fun as as a standard. -> Powerglide 2 Speed Racing Transmission with Transbrake Steel Hub Fresh Rebuild | eBay

Automatics are never as fun as a stick shift. And neither are flappy paddles. I drove my friends well tuned C63 AMG a while back. It has a naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V8 good for about 550 HP. It has that really slick Mercedes Benz double clutch gearbox. And while I could upshift or downshift faster than the blink of an eye, a stick would have made the car a thousand times more fun, even if the lap time and quarter mile get slowed a bit. That motor connected to a stick would be a perfect recipe for hooliganism. :-)

Oh man I am so mixed on this. I am arguing in my mind so there is no way I could argue with you over it. I have driven some really great paddle shift auto gear boxes. I drove a E63 AMG the other day and I got to say it was spot on. BMW does a great job with it as well. Double clutch was a big step but so was down shift rev matching. I had a 350Z with paddles and it did pretty well, would have been better as a manual (no double clutch). My wife's QX56 has rev matching and no paddles (slap stick) and it is fun just the way it is for a big fat but fast SUV.
I like the trade off I guess. You can have your fun but you can also go into relax mode and never touch a thing if you want.

350 is a good solid transmission but it will kill you on gas if you plan on building a car with one. My 86 firebird got 6 miles a gallon highway miles. You start fucking around in something like that you can actually watch the gauge go down. That car was fun. It tore apart tranny mounts and and exploded rear end once. I was in a bind needing replacements and ended up with 4:10's. I'll never do that again. Nice launch but no top end at all. If i build this rx7 its getting no older then a 700r4 trans. I want over drive for taking it on the highway.
