Robert Jordan's wife was also the head editor if I'm not mistaken, and was able to guide sanderson into writing things correctly.
Yep that's pretty much how it went down. Jordan found out he had a rare blood disease and his dr only gave him 4 years to live back in 2006. He started pounding away at a very detailed outline "just in case the unthinkable happened" and passed away in 2007. Luckily Jordan's wife Harriet was also his editor, like you said, and he had a small team of experts that helped him keep all of his characters/cultures/histories straight so Sanderson had a really strong foundation to work on.

Speaking of Sanderson; has anyone read the Mistborn trilogy? Apparently this series's is what Harriet made her final choice for Jordan's predecessor. I haven't had the opportunity to start it.

Yes and I loved it. I had only read Elantris by Sanderson before finding out that he had been tapped to complete the WoT storyline so I picked up the 1st book in the Mistborn series. Loved it. Bought and devoured the other two and also bought the first of his new series. I completed that 1000 page monster in about 4 days.

My brother is also a huge fan of the Mistborn series - I think his story was similar; read up on Sanderson's books while waiting for him to finish writing WoT

...If you can sense a pattern in our family - he reads and has a masters degree and is smart...I play video games and watch movies

I've read everything Sanderson has written. It's all good shit. Mistborn is fantastic, as is his latest addition to that world(albeit much later in the timeline) The Alloy of Law. Elantris was very good. Warbreaker was pretty cool as well. The Way of Kings was fantastic. I read it over the course of a weekend. I slept maybe 2 hours that weekend. If the rest of the Stormlight Archives is even close to as good as that book, it will be easily my favorite series.

The best thing about Sanderson is that he uses completely unique forms of magic for all his worlds. Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker, The Rithmatist and the Stormlight Archives all have completely different and very interesting magic systems. It gets really interesting if you dig into the background of his systems.

Think I might pickup on of his books in a couple of days.

Where should I start? Elantris, so I can see his style develop?

I was impressed by his work in the WoT. I'm man enough to admit I cried a number of times in the last book (no one give away any details so we don't ruin it for the new comers). Not many authors have been able to do that to me.

Then again I've been reading these books for 15 years so I'm a totally WoT fanboy. lol

Did anyone read "New Spring" by Jordan? I thought it was one of his better works. I was really hoping Jordan had left outlines for the other two he said he was going to write but it doesn't seem to be the case.

hehe, I've heard that from at least a half a dozen of my male friends and coworkers as well. Come to think of it, I haven't heard from a single person who finished it that didn't cry at least once. It must be one amazing piece of literature to bring so many males to tears. I may have to pick Eye of the World back up and embark upon the journey you all seem so enamored with.
