Redskins to face protests at Lambeau Field on Sunday | ProFootballTalk

The Packers play host to the Redskins this coming Sunday and there are going to be protests there in response to the Redskin name. Im guessing this is going to be the start of the Native American population going after the NFL for allowing Washington to be called the Redskins. Personally I really dont care about the name at all. Hell even when Minnesota's biggest rival in hockey was forced to change their school's name, (Fighting Sioux) I was on board with letting them keep it. The team has been around since 1932 and up until the last 5 or so years its become an issue. I really do think that whichever group does decide to pursue legal action against the league, or the franchise is going to have a fun time in court. The NFL and Daniel Snyder have enough money to make this a very long and drawn out legal if they so desire.

Too bad Snyder is already filthy rich. Forcing a name change would make merchandise sales go through the roof. I bet there are a few teams around the league that would love to use it as an excuse to boost profits.

It's going to be hard to find a reason for the government to force a name change. Seems like a first amendment issue to me. First amendment rights were extended to corporations in the McCain-Finegold decision. As offensive as it may be to some people, you don't have a constitutional guarantee that you won't be offended.

The NFL should take a different tact, and turn the tables.

Make it known that American Indians are not worthy of an NFL team named after them, and see what happens. Change all of the names of the teams that honor the indiginous folks to names that only honor white European groups (the Fighting Pilgrims), and watch the fur start to fly. Most likely, the very same protestors will be bitching that American Indians aren't being fairly represented.
