Re: people use the wrong word...
No it really isnt a good thing. It a sign of someone thinking they are superior because they noticed someone else made i minor mistake. Its a dick move always has been and always will be. Not one person will ever look you in the face saying why thank you without thinking to themselves "we'll he's an asshole".
I'm not suggesting you said you were perfect and fully understand you know you make mistakes just like everyone else. The avaerge person simply does not care if they misspelled something, used the incorrect version of a word, or forgot to put a comma. Only in situations where it counts do people become worried about that crap. The rest of the time a run on sentence that should have had 2 commas and 3 periods doesn't mean anything. Hence why correcting them is a douche move.
I can give you an excellent example (by naming someone that frequents these forums) of the superiority complex associated with being a grammar nazi in an attempt to belittle others but i'll leave him alone because he's left me alone.Last edited by deathgodusmc; 05-12-14 at 11:56 AM.

I just find it ironic that you are telling people they shouldn't correct others about grammar when if I really cared I could probably find at minimum 100 posts from you correcting people on everything other than grammar. I am sure they feel the same way about you that you feel about your grammr nazi "friend".

But that's NOT acting or believing I am superior. I might have a better grasp of a particular nuance of the language than the person I correct. But that doesn't make me superior any more than you knowing how to lay floors makes you superior to me. Or my knowing how to write software makes me superior to Civil. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. And I would disagree that screwing up the english language means nothing is casual chat. If someone does it in casual chat, they will likely do it when it matters as well.
How many people do you think signed off on that memorial plaque? Important? Maybe not. But I'm sure it was important to someone and all it now shows is that whoever wrote that had no grasp of the simple grammar required for it.
More important? Resumes, applications, formal letters... If someone uses incorrect words in casual conversation, how much do you want to bet that when it becomes important they are going to make the same mistakes? Some of those people might be smart enough to get one of their friends to proofread their work. But what's the guarantee that person knows what they are doing as well? So yeah, even in casual conversation, the importance of using the right words and grammar is paramount. I'm not going to correct everyone (some people are beyond correcting) and I'm not going to sweat the little shit. And I'm not even going to correct the big shit ALL the time. But occasionally, when it's been a bad day, or when someone is rubbing me the wrong way to begin with, or maybe just when i see someone making the same mistake over and over and think maybe they need a little nudge... I might well break out the red ink pen and start correcting.

You had a multi-page debate about the creation and validity of statistical analysis. And before you say it was vital to the topic, it wasn't. The topic was about cancelling a play because the school didn't like the fact that it contained homosexuality. This is but one example. It would be more difficult to find topics you replied in where you DIDN'T act like the expert on the topic.
