Re: Is It 9 Degrees Farenheit Outside?
Mass. and Upstate New York. This is from 3 Saturdays ago:
The snow on the lake was 2 inches of dry powder. We cleared a rink, but you could skate anywhere - like skating through a cloud. Later that week there was a freak of weather one afternoon where it got up to 36 and rained, but then dipped into the low 20s that night. The next morning:
That day, and for the next week, I skated about 2 - 2.5 miles up the lake each morning.
Spherical would be nice, but the oblong of the balloon isn't bad. Also - how do I get the ice sphere out of the ball without ruining the ball? I'm ok making these where I sacrifice a 5 or 10 cent balloon each time. How much is each bouncy ball?

Max, just pour a glass of cognac to cheer/warm yourself up (if the Canadian stores let you buy that).

It's definitely more expensive as you would probably ruin the ball every run. I would venture a guess and say that you can probably get them at the dollar store. Maybe only fill the bouncy balls a little more than halfway, might make them re-usable, and would probably give it a nice flat point for presentation. I don't know... Maybe too much effort.

2 hrs from Ottawa, I hope to do that next year when my youngest is 3. Near Toronto - so it's not crazy crazy cold like the Alaska weather but still -18 celcius today. I would move, based on weather alone to be honest - I'd like to live in either New Zealand or Germany next. Lived in France before coming to Canada and obviously the UK where I was born. Wife turned down a 2 yr contract in Vietnam. I cried a little.

Huh. I hadn't thought about the Dollar Store. I guess I almost never think of the Dollar Store. Maybe I'll go check them out for supplies.
The flat spot isn't an issue. After filling and tying the balloons I just set them outside. They get a flatspot no matter how they sit. The ones that sat with the tie up top have the nicest shape when done.
The main theme of all these things is that they take very little time. I have enough things to be meticulous about, and more actual hobbies than I have time for. As soon as this project becomes anything other than quick and dirty (and cheap) I'm out.
[and I know - I say that now, but... ]
Keep the ideas coming though. Actual Spheres would be pretty sweet. Also, these things could be larger.

Come to think of it. Maybe 2 large plastic punch bowls would do the trick. The ones linked below are textured too. Super cheap.
It would be pretty cool if you can place the flat sides on top of each other after hollowing a little bit for the lights.
Bulk Crystal-Cut Plastic Catering Bowls, 11½" at DollarTree.com
I'm sure you'd be able to find more rounded or half spherical for the same price at your local dollar stores.
