Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Quite possibly.
And I don't necessarily disagree with you. Some people like the second one better.
I was hoping for other examples. Having a wank over the Alien franchise isn't out of place in this forum, so you're safe there.
I'd be happy to settle it by saying that Ridley Scott > James Cameron.
Is it possible that the original is the better film but that the sequel stands up better in terms of repeated viewings? A lot of the cinematic art in Alien has to do with deliberate and slow pacing. You don't know what's going on. You're as fascinated by this new life-form as the characters are. The Geiger styling was a new experience for many viewers. Much of that isn't in operation after you've seen it.
Aliens is more an action movie with Ripley as action hero. Who doesn't love the power loader? It might also be more quotable.

I definitely have watched Aliens more times than Alien, but agree the original is the better film.
The Jurassic Parks are in the same boat for me. While the original is by far the best I still enjoy Lost World for some of the action scenes. Three wasnt all that horrible either, but the kids in 2 & 3 just ruined it for me. I want a gritty, violent, adult Jurassic Park movie.
Haven't seen Jurassic World yet, but have heard good things. Nothing special, but a worthy sequel.

I love both Alien and Aliens. Aliens is probably my favorite movie of all time, at least in terms of being able to watch it frequently. Is it my favorite movie franchise? No. I think of it like Terminator. First was epic, second was different, but more epic. Third and beyond kind of trailed off into dust.
Mad Max was sort of the same, except Fury Road totally kicked ass. I loved the first Mad Max, loved Road Warrior even more, and didn't really care for Beyond Thunderdome.

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
The production quality was far better in fury road than any other except maybe thunderdome. (Technological advances for sure, but both still had that hollywood "sheen" to it that the first two did not). If I were hard pressed to pick a favorite I would have a difficult time not saying Fury Road. But I like to look at all four as one big movie and just go "I like Mad Max".

Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
I love all the mm films, but this last one was harrowing in its tarnished civilisation. The film is a reboot, one which I would have written off as yet another crappy remake, but I must say I went in expecting nothing and walked out having witnessed a truly wonderful film. It's up there with the original Riddick for me. But I'm a sucker for films that have beautiful lighting.
As far as better sequels go other than the mentioned ones I have a hard time thinking of better sequels. Maybe T2, but I'm horribly biased due to the fact I saw T2 before T1. Batman has been mentioned already, although I must say again I'm a sucker for origin stories so I prefer to watch #1 over 2, despite me knowing #2 is a better superhero film. Maybe X-men 2? I feel that's a stronger movie compared to #1.
Sidenote, I wish they did a Second A-team.salty99 liked this post
