Destroying our local Disc Golf Park to make way for BIG OIL
hello everyone. i live in Beaumont, TX and we have a couple of disc golf courses here. the city of Port Arthur, TX has approved a measure to level the course on pleasure island to make way for a temporary trailer park to house Motiva employees for an upcoming expansion project in our area. i am all for new jobs and expansion, but not at the expense of a beautiful park and a part of disc golf history just for a quick buck.
here are some links for you to get the full story because this would be a huge post if i put all the info here. please, even if you don't play disc golf, voice you opposition to such a blatant disregard for nature and the well being of the local citizens. i am going to post a copy of a letter sent by the Executive Director of the Professional Disc Golfers Association followed by links to our local Disc Golf club and various local media as well as an on line petition to stop this from happening. if you have time to read the latest news about Paris Hilton or watch the latest trailer for Shrek 12 then you have time to read these articles. don't think that this can't happen to your local parks. it can and it will. when was the last time you saw a forest that has been around since you were a child get demolished for a new Wal-Mart? Thank you so much from myself and all the citizens of Southeast Texas!
here is a copy of the letter sent to the city council and pi commish from the new pdga executive director
Honorable Mayor & Council Members,
It has come to my attention that the Pleasure Island Disc Golf Course in Port Arthur, TX is in danger of being removed. As the executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, I respectfully request that you reconsider this plan and leave this course intact. As you may know, Pleasure Island played host to both the 1994 and 1995 Professional Disc Golf World Championships. These events brought 265 players from 32 states to your community two years in a row, for a week of competition and camaraderie. The events were hugely successful and the course on Pleasure Island enjoys a special place in the history of the emerging sport of disc golf.
In addition to the economic impact that the events and visitors from outside your area provide, the course is also a great amenity that is enjoyed by your citizens. It would be a shame for Port Arthur to lose such a recreational gem at the expense of development. While I understand that development is crucial to the financial well being of a community, nothing is truly more important than the health and well being of its citizens, and the disc golf course at Pleasure Island provides a fun healthy game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
I sincerely hope that you will side with the citizens of your community and say no to the removal of the Pleasure Island Disc Golf Course. I would be more than happy to discuss this issue with you in greater detail should you wish to speak with me. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to consider this request.
Regards,
Brian J. Graham
