Also to note on the casualties is that this is a time period when most folks wore some sort of armor thus making it more dificult to swim.

Thanks for this info I'd not heard of this battle before.

the army wore armour. the navy didnt. they had no need to wear it. incase of boarding maybe, but they weren't heavily clad in it.

Some will have had armour.. probably ships captains for instance. Most sailors drowned because of the environment in the surroundings rather than cus of armour..

Yes, one of the stories from the battle is the Koreans found a sailor in ornate armour floating in the water, one of the Japanese commanders, they dragged him up, and attached him to the lead ship. On seeing that, Japanese morale took a big hit.

Remember gang, while they do have cannons, a lot of the fighting will still be hand to hand. At this point in history Armor while downsized has not been removed completely, (it wasn't till the more efficient musket and war tactics that make armor obsolete). I'm sure that the japanees wariors had just enough to hamper them in the bad seas.

And quite true marsow, moral is key in any battle. Even today in the various war mineatures that I play, knowing you're opponant and breaking his morral is key to winning/loosing a battle.

yeah, i realised that, but whenever i imagine sailors from that time period, i dont imagine them in armour, just loose fitting foregin clothes and earrings and kidna like pirates.

It's also important to note the difference in tactics. The Japanese prefered troop ships, with support from warships, which presumably would have been used to board the enemy under fire cover. The Koreans prefered warships with longer, heavier cannons, such as the turtle ship (though all were destroyed by Yi Sunsin's useless predecesor). That gave the Koreans the advantage, being able to hit the Japanese from afar, rather than let the Japanese troop ships get close.

And finally, to be fair to Admiral Yi's predecesor, he was an excellent general, but Admiral Yi pissed off someone high up, and he was the replacement admiral. Of course, being an excellent general didn't transfer to the naval world, and he lost most of Admiral Yi's carefully built and planned fleet.

    Today we celebrate our independance

On July 4th, 1776 our ancestors all gathered round to sign the Declaration of Independence, liberating us from England.. Our ancestor's went through hell so people could live a freely. You think they had an easy job? Think again. Unfortunately in this day man has lost many rights once guaranteed to us by the Declaration of Indecence. So i ask you to please appreciate the glorious country we have. We are very lucky to have people who would die for you and me. Sadly many people think our armed forces are terrorists. But i think we should give thanks to them. And anyone else who has fought for our freedom.

    God Bless America.
