Re: Where have ethics gone?
So, if it's OK to use his sperm to have a baby while he's in a coma and will most likely never recover, then I guess it's OK to impregnate a woman in a coma to have a baby? If he doesn't have to consent, then she shouldn't either if the tables were turned.
Also, I guess the Taxpayers will be supporting this single mom by way of Social Security Benefits because the father is most definitely disabled and if he dies the child will be eligible for survivor benefits.
Great, another single woman actively trying to have a baby out of wedlock with no intention of spending her life (or the baby's life) with the father. That's just what we need to teach our children.
What a fucking joke our legal system has become.

Re: Where have ethics gone?
As a geneticist......I say let the parents choose.
of course, its' not like he woudl have laid claim to his sperm in his will, if he had a will at all.
pretty far stretch to grant the parents.
it's quite common for minors that go under chemo (male 12-18 year old minors) or radiation treatment in cancer to "donate" their sperm for future use, since the treatment has a high incidence of damaging their reproductive capabilities, or causing defects in their sperm.
12 year old boys, being told to masturbate, or being electrically stimulated, if not surgically harvested for sperm, as advised and approved by their parents and physicians.
sounds crazy....but if it was you and yours....and you knew the future conseuqences of being under such a treatments, I bet you'd recommend the same for your son/daughter (they do it for eggs as well).

Re: Where have ethics gone?
That's a family matter and no other person has a right to make that moral decision for them. The family should know the best course of action because they likely knew the man better than anyone else.
As for the conservative vs. liberal debate, I think the guys who make South Park summed it up the best. In one episode regarding the debate on the war in Iraq, it was decided at the end of the episode that we need both parties. The conservatives like to kick ass and defend the country from invaders and the liberals make it look like the country cares about the rest of the world so other countries don't think we're a bunch of assholes that like to have wars. It's all about balance. We need both to survive.

I know this post won't help the debate much but I have to confess that the first thing that came to mind when I read Bacon's post was the Monty Python's song "Every Sperm is Sacred" from the movie Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
To see the lyrics of this song, check out the link below. Not the funniest of their songs, but it is humorous.
