So this cop...
comes up to me at the gas station like 5 minutes ago. He pulls over and get outta the car, and does the whole cop thing, "Good afternoon guys."(there was someone pumping gas next to me) We say hey, and he gets this clip board out. He starts to ask the other guy some questions like "How old are you? You got any ID on you?" stuff like that. Then he says, "Yea, were cracking down on kids skipping school...(somthing somthing, I stopped listening after that.)" He talks to the other guy, who is 20, and get some info from him. I figure he's about to head back around the pump to me, so I start pulling out my wallet, but he didn't. He got back in his car and left. I thought it was kinda strange that he wouldn't ask me, considering I'm just about the other guys age. Maby it's that I look a little older than I am...hmmmm strange tho...anwys thought I'd share that since I did find it quite funny.

This is just a guess of mine, but I'm guessing that the guy that they asked for his ID may have looked like someone they were after. He didn't ask to see yours because you didn't fit the profile.
I've witnessed this firsthand several years ago. I was driving out of the parking lot after a baseball game and a police officer was sitting at the corner. There were many cars exiting the lot after the game was over, but when I passed him he turned on his lights and pulled me over. He asked to see my ID AND one of my friends that was with his girlfriend in the backseat. I asked him why he pulled us over (we weren't speeding, we went through a green light, etc.) and he said that my license plate light was out. I said OK. That's when I noticed his partner was behind my vehicle on the passenger side looking very alert and with his hand on his sidearm, that was still in the holster. We gave him our ID's. He went to the police car while his partner stayed put. When he came back he gave us our ID's back and said "Thanks for your cooperation. Your friend here (he pointed and smiled at my friend in the backseat) really looks like a guy we've been after today. Sorry for the interruption but we had to be sure. You're free to go, have a nice evening" So we all laughed and drove away. I asked my friend "Is there something you need to tell me?"
And if you are wondering, I did check when I got home and my license plate light was working just fine.
So my guess is that the police officer wanted to make sure the person near you at the gas station wasn't someone that they were after, and used the "skipping school" reason to check his ID.

SEJ,
Similar deal happened to me once at a softball game. I was spectating with my girlfriend and we were sitting next to each other in lawchairs. All of a sudden a cop walked from behind me and asked me some questions, like what was I doing, how long I had been there, that sort of stuff. I answered the questions but was kind of wierded out by the situation. After all, I had been sitting there for probably 30 minutes before he showed up. I was also a few beers in.
The next day I found out that there was a break in near the softball diamonds, and I happened to fit the perp's description and wearing the same color clothes. A co-worker also told me that I only knew half the story about the cop. Apparently the cop's partner was behind me the entire time with his hand on his pistol. I didn't even know it.

Cops are here to protect us (for the most part, every once in a few thousand cops you get a bad one) and make sure that people aren't running around and breaking the law. Unless you are doing (or have done) something illegal, I don't see why you wouldn't comply with a police officer. They are just doing their jobs, so why don't you make it easier on them and just follow their directions.
