Thread: Offensive names.

Is there a rule here at TTP regarding offensive names? And what is the criteria of offense?
I ask because I've seen some names lately that I really dislike. (I'm tempted to list them, but off hand, I can only remember one and I don't want to single any one person out.)
I feel fairly certain that racial slurs and the like are not allowed, but what about sexual phrases/terms?
I'm far from pristine, and I'm not one to censor someone else either, but when I see some names like I've seen, it makes me want to leave the server for a bit. I really don't want to see or deal with the sort of people that would have such obviously scurrilous names.

Generally unless it is a major infractions, suchas blatant racially derogatory remarks or blatant references to illegal actions, it will go unpunished. While other things may be offensive to some as BD usually says we play a game where we kill people over and over, which might be offensive to many.

Well... the official stance towards profanity as I understand it is that it's acceptable as long as it isn't grossly racial or explicitly vulgar. It's a mature game for mature gamers, and if they want to choose player names that are rude or offensive, that's their decision to make. I agree that it's distasteful to run around proclaiming your sexual prowess to the world (and it's also really hard to take those people seriously in the game), but we shouldn't (and can't realistically) try to censor people based on profanity alone, because that comes down to each person's opinion of what constitutes an inappropriate name.

I agree with all of the above.
I believe the name/names I'm referring to would be better described as "....or explicitly vulgar"
But I guess that's the question, what is explicitly vulgar?
Names I would consider equal to the names I'm questioning would (IMO) be, r**job, c***sucker, saladtossing, and ect.

edit - I mean no offense with my similar examples listed above and hope I have not breached any rule by typing them.

My 2 cents here, so take it as that, not server policy.

I have been called almost every name in the book via VOIP and text chat. I laugh at the stupidity of the player, and the frustration I have caused them. If someone wants to claim to be Ron Jeremy through their player name, good for them. I will probably just ignore it, or laugh.

If the name, or any chat, causes a disruption to the server then you will probably see a kick.

Even more so with counterstrike since one can change ones name easily,

Personally there are quite a few words tossed about the server that really hit me the wrong way, but in the end there are a few that i use in a very joking manner, and those who i used it around know this. Ultimately a line has to be drawn between purely offensive and words that can be used playfully.

Take the n word for example, its hard to find a context in which its not intended to piss someone off.

But with words like saladtossing and things of that sort it cant really be helped if the servers are to remain partially filtered.

At any rate, maybe I should PM an authority on the subject instead of dancing around my own similes? The one name I have in mind, I believe is pretty obviously vulgar.

Any mods/admins/ect. mind me sending them a PM?

Also, I'm not talking about words being used in the course of conversation/debate/flaming, I'm only speaking of gamer names. I have to see it when they kill me, I kill them or any other time it pops up in the chat screen.

We do not police a game; where you are asked to kill people repeatedly, for hours on end, in a variety of ways, for peoples names, nor for most of what they say UNTIL it crosses the line into a disruption.

Simply having a limited imagination forcing someone to name themselves 'saladtosser' 'cockgrabber' 'tainttaster' 'toilettucan' 'analannie' 'thecup_wheresmygirls' or the like does not cross that line. Even rasist names for the most part will not cross that line either.

Sure it probably draws additional attention as it is immediately apparent that person is an idiot, but having a dumb or possibly offensive name is not in itself actionable by the admin staff.

My recommendation when you see something like this is to ignore it and avoid said person.
