Diabetes, Children and Suckage
Well I know I've been gone almost two months on personal business, and now I am through the hardest part of the adjustment and wanted to let everyone know exactly what happened...
My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She requires 4 shots of insulin a day, and careful monitoring during the first 3 months so doctors can figure out just how much insulin is enough. We had a week at Children's Hospital when my daughter was first diagnosed. She had a blood glucose of over 350 and moderate keytones in her urine. This is all very bad, but luckily she didn't get so far as to have acidosis (which is where your body starts developing serious complications).
Doctors say we caught it about as early as you can so she should be able to do anything anyone else does, except be a pilot or astronaut. She's adjusting well, and doesn't even mind the shots anymore.
What really threw us into a tailspin (as if that wasn't enough), was my being diagnosed with diabetes also, just a week out of her hospital stay. My blood glucose fasting was 270, and they were FREAKIN out at the doctor's office.
We've finally made enough adjustments to diet and routine I can start playing again, and not be stressed out worrying about stuff. So I'm back and expect to see a lot of me fraggin your asses.

Re: Diabetes, Children and Suckage
hey bud, really sry to hear about you and your families condition... Im a nutrition major and we really get taught that daily exercise and diet change can help YOU... your daughter however got it from your genes and Im sry to say that until better research comes along.. the insulin shots is how its gonna roll... that and she will learn young, how much sugar EVERY food has in it.. it will be a lifestyle adjustment for you and her but it will hopefully become so natural that its a easy change. my prayers be out to bro

Hey, Rumble -
While I, personally, am not diabetic, my best friend has type 1 diabetes, and my wife is type 2, and I've had surgery that makes me much more aware of sugar intake and the like. It is an adjustment.
However - while I'm not going to say it's not a very serious issue, it is managable if you eat right, take your medication, and do what you're supposed to. (I'm REALLY not trying to sound like Wilford Brimley in the Liberty commercials)
Hit me up if you've got any questions, I'll be able to answer them, or at least point you in a good direction to get an answer.

If your kid wants something sweet to eat for a snack, try sugar snap peas. It's what my mom eats (that and a little bit of really dark chocolate; 86% cacao).
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

it sad to hear that our numbers are growing. what's worse is that they still don't have a specific reason why it occurs. they have possible causes, but no actual trigger. my girlfriend just got her PHD in genetic biology, and she said that there has been recent talks about it possibly being triggered by a virus, or a cold, or an injury. she told me of her roommate's brother, who got it in college, just a little bit of time after his college roommate got it. mine happened shortly after a violent injury to my head (yes, it explains a lot). as for the genetic side, my grandmother had type 2, and aunt (from same grandmother) has type 1. my hospital, during my "diabetic training course" told me that it tended to skip generations, but not as a rule. simply put, nobody knows.
anyway, best of luck to you and yours. just remember it's a big balance game. you can eat anything you want within reason, but you have to prepare for it first (a little booster shot) or you'll feel like hell for it after.
