Hey, I'm a newbie on these forums

Today I purchased the retail copy of Left 4 Dead (the first one) from my local EB Games store. I had checked the requirements multiple times and my computer far exceeds the recommended requirements and should be able to run the game with no issues.

I also knew I needed Steam, so I managed to get that installed on my computer.

I inserted the disk into my drive, and launched the installation, however all that happened was a black box that popped up and disappeared in the space of about one second. Then...nothing. I have googled this, trying to fix it, but I can't come to any conclusion, and I need help.

On a whim, I then activated my game on Steam, and it started downloading something that is about 6 gig in size and would take a good 8 hours to complete. Is this Left 4 Dead that my Steam account is downloading? If it is, I'm happy to wait for it to download, seeing as I can't get it installed using the physical disk.

I don't understand why Steam would need to download the game - but tbh, I don't care - I just want this game downloaded/installed/whatever the heck it needs to do so I can play it.

I'm not very happy about this, I just want to play my game, I was looking forward to L4D; and being relatively new to the world of gaming, I do need some help. Thank you so much for your time, guys.
