Anyone else play for 12+ hours at a time?
I'm curious because I've done this from time to time, and a couple of times I played for 24+ hours. I've read about people overseas dropping dead because they played for a long stretch so I'm wondering how this effects your overall health.
I know from personal experience that it does take a toll on your body. You get fatigued, pain in the eyes, migraines, your not eating enough, it is mentally exhausting and it is hard to go to sleep afterwards (your mind won't shut off and you keep thinking about the game). I've visited friends after playing long sessions and they told me I looked like I was on drugs (I guess its the puffy eyes). It drains you...and it does make you feel a bit off, not "drunk" but close to it. I also wear a headset which is playing hell with my ears....
I assumed most of this was due to the lack of sleep at first, but the more I did it the more I noticed that I only got certain symptoms after playing FPS games for long periods of time. The eyes are the worst, I get the horrible pain behind my right eye after a few hours of playing now. That's why I limit myself these days.
I do take short breaks between games btw, but it's mostly just long enough to grab a cigarette, use the bathroom, and get a fresh drink. So 3-5 minutes tops between 1-2 hour "rounds" of game play.
I don't have these problems when I'm playing my "retro" non-FPS games. I assume its because when I play FPS games I'm constantly giving it my full attention and most of the time I can't pause.
Anyone else have these problems after playing for an extended period of time? Would our resident nurse care to comment? I'm interested in hearing the opinion of someone who's actually gone to school on this one.

Well, you know, there's usually a warning for every game that says, "Rest fifteen minutes for every hour of gameplay." It's because you can get the symptoms, that you stated. When you stare at a screen for so long, your eyes get strained, and that's what causes the pain behind your right eye. The more you play for so long, then the quicker you will experience that pain.
Fatigue is just natural when playing. Many people think that games are just easy and that they don't require a lot of brain power. Well, they're wrong. You use a lot of your brain. You use hand-eye coordination, you read, you process the actions you will take (logic) as well as your awareness skills that come into play in everything you do, e.g noticing a player jump from a bush. Basically gaming is tiring sport which is why you shouldn't play non-stop. When you start feeling tired, you should stop. Have something to eat, go out for a while and just relax / have a rest. It does wonders. This links in with migraines too.
You don't eat enough because you're too concentrated on the game. You can't get to sleep because you're too concentrated on the game.
Hope this helped.
PS: Smoking's bad for you :P
Edit: Forgot to mention RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). It's where you feel pain in an area of your body after a long period of repetitive action, for example, typing.

When i had Internet, I did it all the time. When i wasn't at work, I was at home playing L4D. I admit it took over my life somewhat and I'm actually pretty glad I'm now in a situation where I can't play as much, because I can't afford Internet at the moment. I also realised that I used to channel all my anger through the game, from my day at work or whatever, which isn't so good, as that anger then just gets channeled to the people I am playing with.
If I do get my Internet back, I'll be very mindful of how much time I spend on the game, and how I behave during it. Since I haven't played properly for a while, when I do go on, it feels more like a zombie horror game, whereas before when I was on constantly, it was just pure aggression and the need to win, win, win.
I miss having Internet but I guess all things happen for a reason. I'll see you guys on the other side! (eventually)[s]L4D - PC & Xbox 360[/s]

The most I play at a time these days would be about 3-4 hours and I usually stop for a few minutes to grab a drink or use the loo halfway. Anything longer than that and I notice my wrists start to get sore: I tend to grip the joypad pretty hard (I do the same with a pen/pencil when I'm writing, not sure why that is) and I reckon that might be the cause.
One of the things I do wonder about is the impact of playing immediately before going to sleep. As Hillbilly said, I notice if I've been playing for an extended period before bed that I can't help but think about the game, particularly if I've been in a tight match. On the other hand, if I've been struggling to get a good game going then it doesn't seem to bother me as much. It'd be interesting to know if people here have any theories as to whether it affects how easily you nod off.
I couldn't envisage playing for 12 hours+ solid: I mean, do you go without food during that, or do you grab something during the breaks?RIP Mike Starr
