Likewise if Texas withdrew. There isn't a state/commonwealth in this union that isn't dependent upon another (state, country, or otherwise),so much so that i'd venture to say that no state can feasibly support its population (especially with current infrastructure)....well maybe Alaska.

In either case, i'd be interested to see what bureaucracy would be replaced with? Do we suppose that now we're ready, mature enough, for something along the lines of the Articles of Confederation?

This is not to say i'm not slightly worried/disappointed in the current state of things. But for all my optimism, i can't possible fathom the amount of teamwork it would take to get something other than what we've been used to for so long, to work.
    Well Said.

Trade benefits everyone involved, which is why the 50 states are better than the sum of its parts.

Good point about what would happen after the "revolution". Anarchists never think of things like this, they just dont give a fuck about what would happen after we tore apart the government that holds this country together. Of course they will say "Well it will be something better than what we have now", talk about taking a couple-hundred of years work for granted, lets hear some better ideas!

Not to belittle Texas or anything but if Texas were to revolt or whatever, the rest of the 49 states would kick their ass pretty hard. Only different between texas and every other state, is that it would take longer

    Well, maybe Hawaii could...
We were at one time, before the USS took it over.
Me: "But the Gunslinger is so much more fun..."
Langrad: "We're here to win, not to..."
    Me: "Have fun?" "Hahaha"

Every program in the government is broken in some way. Like Joe said, its easy to look and say this is broken and that is broken and so on and so forth. But honestly that isn't the way to look at this at all. Yeah that by itself looks scary but just because left handed school children can't get their 15 dollar left handed scissors stipend doesn't mean the government is going to crumble. What you have to look at is the rising overhead of some of the government programs such as Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid. With the baby boomers and rising health care costs, these programs have the potential to bankrupt the current budget within 20 years.

Now we have two options. Do we raise taxes? Or do we cut the fat on these programs? Well lets look at it. In 2003 Medicare and Medicaid combined for about 18% of our total budget. Thats about 300 billion dollars. Why the fuck is the combined payout for medicare and medicaid measured in the millions? 300 Billion dollars in, a couple hundred million out......thats all I have to say.

As for secession from the union, a couple cities in south Florida passed proclamations that formally requested that FL be divided into 2 states.

If it worked for Carolina, Virginia, and Dakota, why not Florida?

    lol.

As long as I'm in the Florida that serves sweet tea, I'm good.

To be honest as far as governments go, i've fallen in love with the parliamentary systems of Europe. Maybe its just because they're different than what we have here, maybe its because i think they have smoothed over some of the issues we have here (and replaced them with others).
Still, that is Europe, and this is the United States. Logistically speaking, a parliamentary system here would be a nightmare.

Then again, its never been tried either.

Re: Are we heading for disaster?

In my opinion, our country is in its current state of affairs because we have become too nice. We need some more Teddy Rossevelts. We need leaders that aren't afraid to say what they really think, instead of everybody just putting a new spin on the same old shit. Seriously, how much change do you really think the President in 2008 can make? You do realize that the President really doesn't have THAT much power. I think we need to get back to our Imperialistic roots and start kicking ass again. People used to respect the United States, but because we were at the top for so long, we got lazy. Today, our school systems are a joke because we have people that teach so they can coach, because its an easy job, because they like the hours, because whatever. If I were in charge of things, becoming a teacher would be the most difficult process in the work force. Teaching would be a very well paid, and very respected career. You wouldn't have these jackoffs that stick a movie into a VCR and go check their email for hours on end. But until we get our schools right, we're not going to get anything right. Second thing I would change is building up a very strong, very intimidating, very impressive military. I'm tired of this shit that soldiers can't fire until fired upon, don't have the BEST equipment on the battlefield, etc. The military would strike FEAR into it's combatants, whereas now it is often the butt of jokes. I think it's time to again start carrying that big stick, instead of just talking softly.

Re: Are we heading for disaster?

I think you guys have watched too many scary governmental videos/TV shows.
Or maybe watched too much news... watch news too much nowadays and you can get the idea burned into your skull that the world is just dying and every thing's horrible and crazy shit's going down, but it's really not, I think it's always been like that, actually could've been worse. (I'm thinking 1970's and stuff)
Whatever, topics like this are bad for me, I'll just scoot my way out...
