I have lots of real friends on TTP.
Some, like Rickover, Procb, and Brolotto, I have met in real life.
Some, Like Crage, I knew in real life before I was a TTPer
Most, like Rock Lobster, Ethereal, KYle, and others I only know from forum posts and in-game yapping.
But friends they are all friends.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.

Re: online friends?
In a time long past, you'd be right, but in this day and age, with voice software and even live video possible online, friendship is being redefined as not relying on geographical convenience at all. Not to say that you can't be friends with someone using pure text, but it's much harder to be close.
Personally, I view TTP as a group like a Fraternity or Boy Scouts; it's like-minded individuals who have each others backs, whether or not they know them that well. I do have some fairly close friends online (though rarely closer than in person), and since I moved recently I have some "normal" friends become online friends (looking at Squeaker and Redmako, mostly), which is fine and dandy.
So yeah, you can have friends online. It's just harder, and rarely as close as a "real life" friend.
