    New compy

I am going to be getting a new comp soon and so far this is what I have come up with (with punky doing 99% of the "coming up with").

--PS 520W - OCZ ModStream ATX 2.01 Power Supply
    --Asus P5LD2-VM 945G Video/Audio/GB-LAN/IEEE-1394/PCI-E/SATA3G/DDR2/1066FSB/ATX P4 775 (motherboard)

    -- Intel Pentium D 930 LGA775 3.0 GHz 2MB (per core) 800FSB Dual Core (Processor)

    --DDR2 (533) 4200- 1 GB (2 pcs512) Buffalo (D2U533B-K1G/BR) (Memory)
    --SATA3G- Maxtor (6V160E0) Diamond Max 10 160 GB SATA 3G 7200 RPM 8MB cache (Hard drive)

    --PNY Geforce 7600 GT 256 MB GDDR3/PCI-E/HDTV-Out/Dual-DVI

That's all the major stuff....Lemme know what you think

    RE: New compy

Are you absolutely sure you want to do this now? Core 2 Duo's out, AMD recently bought ATI.. and DX10 is a short ways down.

Looks good otherwise. Might want to add an extra GB of memory.

    RE: New compy

why would you blow so much on an intel 930, when the AM2's are out.....run on lower voltages, and can clock almost up to 3.0ghz?

And an AM2 running at 2.5-30Ghz schools an intel, no contest.

As well, blowing so much on the intel 930.......and then compromising on the 7600GT..........bad decision.

further......if performance is the key, then getting a 160Gb HD, instead of 2 80-gig's in RAID-0 is another bad decision. Nearly the same price.....yet with the RAID-0 you get 2X the write and increased read times. Substantial increases. Plus you get to say "I have a RAID". And chicks dig that.

And yet another further......there are HD's out now with 16MB caches. Wave of the future baby. Take that cash out of your CPU, and dump it where it counts. Loading and playing game (so that's GPU, RAM, and HD speed......CPU increases are negligible with bottlenecks in any of these areas).

say waahh? lol I know nothing about computers, which is why posted this on here. Would splitting up the 160 into two 80 gigs with RAID make a significant difference? And do I absolutely have to have it? Also how much faster would an AM2 be than intel and once again is the difference that significant? More people give me some input please. Thanks

    Rocks your sox's.

Oh yeah - Ditto everything bigdog said...if there's anyone here that knows gaming rig's it's him. He helped me build my first one and has helped and built PC's for some others here.......

    RE: New compy

The newest AMD socket release is compatible with DDR2, but not the existing 939. They are also not going backwards compatible. If you want the faster memory speed, you have to get Intel. Faster memory creates faster load times.

...bigdog..., I know that you know your shit, but RL may be on a budget.

The most important thing is... how much does all of this shit cost? Right?

I do not think that telling him to buy better, more expensive parts will help him very much. There are plenty of people here that can build a gaming rig, including myself.

RL, if you are purchasing components, always get the product right before the price jump. Do not listen to the AMD or Intel cheerleaders. Everyone has an opinion. I have used them both, and the video card is more important than the processor, imho. I get the same FPS with an AMD 3700+ as I do with my P4 3.4 ghz. It is all on the video card.

You do not need a 520w power supply unless you are gonna have 2 video cards in SLI. It is a waste of money. That Maxtor drive will do you just fine. I have 2 of them and they are great. Maxblast is a great formatting tool too . And I do not know of any games that currently utilize double string code. Dual core processing will not really help your gaming performance, unless you are running adaware or norton in the background, which actually may be a possiblity.

Choose the Processor/Mainboard/Memory that best fits your budget, but read reviews before you buy it. Use sites like www.tomshardware.com. Excellent reviews. Also, try 1up.com. They have the reviews from Computer Gaming World.

The Hard Drive should be the very last issue for performance. The processor you selected is less than $200 and the video card less than $180. No need to spend an arm and a leg on a HD with these lower end parts.

Either step up to a faster processor, or up the video card. I recommend the video card first. You could probably find something really good for less than $250. After you have this, then shop for the ideal HD. Those raptors are screamers too. I wants me one.

Just read legit reviews. Do your research. And do not order anything just because a friend or someone on a message board says it is good, including me, bigdog, or anyone. This is your money. You do the research.

General Motors: Almost out of cash

    Full

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors shook an already embattled auto industry Friday as it reported a huge quarterly loss that was much worse than expected and warned it is in danger of running out of cash in the coming months.

The nation's largest automaker reported that it lost $4.2 billion, or $7.35 a share, excluding special items. That's up from the loss $1.6 billion or $2.86 a share it reported a year earlier and was far worse than the forecast of analysts surveyed by earnings tracker Thomson Reuters, which had forecast a loss of $3.70 a share.

But the most shocking news came in its statements about its cash position. GM said it had burned through $6.9 billion during the quarter and warned that it "will approach the minimum amount necessary to operate its business" during the current quarter.

In addition, the company said that in the first half of next year its "estimated liquidity will fall significantly short" of what it needs to continue operating. It said the only thing that would save it would be a significant improvement in economic and automotive industry conditions, help from the federal government, better access to capital markets or some combination of those options.
