    Evan Tanner

Read a report this morning (prior to my coffee) that Evan Tanner, former UFC champion, died from exposure in the Desert this past weekend.

Tanner was a great fighter in his day.

Sad to see him kill himself. Addiction was a problem, and when someone states that they are headed into the desert to pay homage to the mysteries of nature, one cannot be blamed for suspecting alcohol or drugs influencing the decision.

    Rest in peace Evan Tanner.

Apparantly he went to "cleanse" himself, and according to those who knew him, he had taken several short trips to do that very thing before with no problems.

It does suck that he dies, but I don't think his intention was to kill himself, from the story I read it appears his motorcycle had run out of gas and he decided to walk through the desert.

If I rushed to judgement then shame on me. I re-read the article and now see the bit about cleansing. Maybe that can be a more positive spin on a terrible situation.

The first time I watched him fight was when he took on Dave Terrell who was no slouch. Evan beat him and beat him and beat him. To the point that we all were saying enough already, end the fight.

Also, who can forget the epic match when Evan fought Dave Louaso (sp?). That was the last time I saw Louaso fight, and I dont believe that Louaso has fought since. That forehead reminded me of the shelves I had to hang in my shop for my tools.

I liked Evan a lot. I was always rooting for him. I hate to think of the way he went out. I can only pay homage by mentioning his name and recalling what it was that made me a fan of his.

If you were a fan, or are interested, stop by the website to pay respect.

I read about this on CNN.com. After seeing this photo it's easy to see that this guy had issues.

Clearly....since people with long red beards MUST have issues.

    Idiot.

    *edit*

Idiot may be a bit harsh...

    Re: Evan Tanner

Yea I don't understand why the harshness. This guy went out into the wilderness with a ton of good equipment. He went knowing what he was doing. Human beings have a history of taking pilgrimages, treks, journeys, and other trips to get in touch with themselves and with the world in which they live. Calling someone an idiot for having a beard is just retarded (santa has a beard...), but more than that calling someone foolish, or saying they had problems as a result of them trying to get in touch with themself and the world around them is just plain ignorant. Perhaps if all of us took a little more time to connect with ourselves and the earth we would all be a little better off. This guy was a UFC fighter and a tough mo-fo, so naturally his trek isn't going to be to the beach. After all, how are you going to find yourself if you don't challenge yourself and discover what you're truly made of.

Anyhow. I am jealous that he went out and did stuff like this and sad that he died. Who knows, maybe he found what he was looking for after all.

    Re: Evan Tanner

Tanner did have issues with Alcohol, but based on reading more, it doesn't sound like that was a factor here, perhaps he truely had overcome his issues. One would have to have spent time with him over the last few months to really know.

He was a warrior, and he was one who does.

I can't see the photo posted by Trigger, but I have seent he photos of him with the beard. I dont really think that the beard was his issue.

I am not sure whether you are just injecting your bitter personality into a thread paying respect to a dead man for the sport of it, or if you know something I dont about people who have beards.

    Re: Evan Tanner

That sucks man...I watched tanner right in the beginning of UFC so I consider him one of the pioneers of the MMA sport in the U.S. along with the Shamrocks, and Gracies, etc etc.

I don't care if he had issues or not, it's shitty to judge people becuase they can't get their act together; too bad he passed away, he was a good fighter.
