Re: News- Obama to close Gitmo?
A long overdue thing.
I'm not talking about the prisoners, torture, security, communism, or any of that... The fact of the matter is that Cuba asked for their land back a considerably long time ago. (decades) The least that can be done is to respect that. Guantanamo isn't worth all that much.
Considering it's such a small area, I'm sure there is somewhere in the U.S. that could serve the role if need be.

Go ahead and bring the folks there to the American courts and American prisons along with our local criminals. They are criminals and should be treated as such, with all the benefits of the American courts and a good American lawyer working hard to set them free, Right? Fast forward to the mindset that the planning and execution of 9/11 is in the same class of violation as Billy Bob who shot his wife and her secret lover while he was drunk. We did it throughout the 90's, so it isn't unexplored territory.
Seems to me that KSM should be shot in the stomach and thrown off the 75 foot southern cliffs of GTMO to drown in the surf. Solitary confinment in Supermax would be a decent compromise, we will see what happens.
Sad part is that these Al Quaeda types wont be subjected to rape in our prisons the way you would if you robbed a bank. They will be protected, meals, holy book, and all.

Re: News- Obama to close Gitmo?
I am kind of curious how it will effect our military placement. We have had that base since after the Spanish-American War and it has been pivotal to coast guard activity and drug interdiction. I say we need to keep it due to what it does for our other endeavors

Personally, I say leave Gitmo alone.
Strategically, it gives us a forward operating position. When responding to events, several hundred miles could make quite a bit of difference in transit time. I'm sure it also functions as a weather station (don't know for a fact) but sitting in the path of all those hurricanes, I'm sure it provides a lot of research potential.
It also strategically sits on the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. Another strong presence could effectively shut down the entire Gulf without much effort. Don't kid yourself. If Hugo Chavez could get Guantanamo, I think he would make a serious attempt. How effective he could be remains to be seen, but I think he would try.
It's under a 99 year lease as I remember. Just like Hong Kong was. Right now, its a business contract to leave in place.

Wanting to close more bases already huh? I see to recall Clinton doing the same thing when he was in office...yeah, not off to a good start in my book. Even if it doesn't happen, the fact that he wants to close it is not a good sign in my opinion. We need every available military base we can get, especially with a war/wars going on and after the 9/11 attacks. If it happened once, it can happen again and we'll need everything we can spare in case shit hits the fan again.

And also..... military bases are rather like prisons. Everyone agrees we need them. But NIMBY.
Hell, here near Houston, we have a major prison system off to the SouthWest. The mayor is pushing the governor to move the prison because the land has become so valuable. The regional airport out there can't expand any other direction except where the prison sits. blah blah blah. Oh, and having a prison near so many citizens could be dangerous. Dude. That prison has been there for 100+ years. Long before these suburbs showed up.
But yeah. Everyone wants bases and prisons. But Not In My Back Yard. El Toro had a constant fight in California because of how loud military jets are when taking off.

Re: News- Obama to close Gitmo?
What i gathered from the article is that he wants to close the prison at Gitmo and remove the prisoners. The article does not state anything about closing down other operations. I was under the impression that the prison is an aside to a larger infrastructure. I really don't know, this is an assumption.
Also... didn't Bush also project closing down guantanamo earlier this year? Junish... let me use my googlin' skills.
