Damn Pirates are at it Again...

Well, those stupid Somali pirates are still trying to test the will and power of some of the world's largest militaries and some of the world's most influential countries. Today, Somali pirates captured the Sirius Star, a massive Saudi oil tanker carrying 2,000,000 barrels of oil and 25 crewmen, a few hundred miles off the coast of Kenya. This is the largest hijacking/act of piracy in the history of the world. What do you guys think? I'm pretty sure this marks the beginning of the end of large scale piracy around Africa. It was bad enough when they stole a ship full of old Soviet tanks, but now...stealing oil? And from the Saudis? This is going to have serious repercussions for piracy as an institution.

Heh, I saw that. I thought I was the only one watching the pirates.

I think if they keep up, they are about to bite off more than they can chew. Just ask the Barbary Pirates what their undoing was. Thomas Jefferson wasn't playing around.

I would tend to agree with your analysis of the situation. If the pirates decide to open the holds into the sea, even the environmental activists will be screaming for blood despite the usual left leaning tendencies.

Really good article on piracy in the modern day in Atlantic Monthly about 3 years ago I think. But the pirates generally don't know nor care what is on whatever ship they target. They know the governments will generally pay whatever ransom in order to get their citizens out alive.

Whatever they can move (at least in SE Asia) gets offloaded into local blackmarkets. iPods, tennis shoes, yada yada yada. I don't imagine the African black markets are as well connected due to geographical isolation and complete lack of infrastructure.

See..... even pirates believe in Obama's redistributing the wealth concept. They already show its not only functional, but profitable as well.

I still think they should have cut holes in the sides of the soviet tanks ship and used the tanks to make the ship a true pirate ship "PREPARE TO BROADSIDE!!"

I hope they are at least the smarter pirates that know RPG+TANK OF OIL=BIG FREAKIN BOOM!

real sea piracy is something like a 16 bn $ a year business, its crazy. and its pretty much hijacking ships and crew and ransoming them. its very underplayed in the media of how big of a global problem it is. every time i think of modern sea pirates i think of that bill murray in that movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou when his ship gets boarded and he goes crazy and shoots all the pirates. for some reason, i fantasize about killing pirates from time to time too, or perhaps writing a movie about modern pirates/or fighting them. here is a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0yucFw3qCQ such a great movie lol. especially when they raid the pirates hideout to rescue the bond company stooge lol. they should have got mroe practice on TTP before launching their op though. UAV and arty could have solved a lot of problems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbSghPrDyj0

sorry im making such a laugh out of a real problem. it is really serious about pirates and im just using it as a point to amuse myself.

Carpetbomb the continent and use it as an objective lesson for the Middle East (especially Israel and Palestine.)

Not much in Africa except lions, gorillas, and viruses so ghastly they make antibiotic-immune bubonic plague look like a joke.
